Defeating Thailand, Vietnamese women's petanque wins 2025 world championship

Facing the opponents who are considered the best in the world , the Vietnamese girls played confidently and effectively, completely controlling the game. At the end of the match, Team Vietnam 2 won impressively with a score of 13-1, one of the most lopsided results in the history of confrontations between the two teams.

According to head coach Dang Xuan Vui, the Vietnamese athletes even had the chance to end the match with a score of 13-0. "However, the score of 13-1 is still proof of the athletes' top form and competitive spirit," he commented.

Vietnam Petanque has two teams participating in the women's trio event of the 2025 World Cup. Vietnam Team 2 consists of 4 athletes: Nguyen Thi Thi, Lai Thi Dung ( Hanoi ), Nguyen Thi Thuy Kieu (Army) and Nguyen Thi Nhu Y (Ho Chi Minh City). Of which, Nguyen Thi Thi regularly plays in official competitions and is a pillar of the team with stable performance. The remaining three athletes take turns taking on two positions depending on each match.

In this year's tournament, both teams were exempted from the first round. In the second round, Vietnam 1 beat Taiwan (China) 13-5, while Vietnam 2 beat Czech Republic 13-6. The two teams met in the quarterfinals and Vietnam 2 won 13-3 to advance to the semi-finals.

Here, the Vietnamese girls continued to show their mettle when they made a spectacular comeback, beating Belgium 13-10 despite being down 0-6, before defeating Thailand in the final.

This gold medal marks the second consecutive world title for Vietnamese petanque in the women's trios event, following a historic 13-12 victory over Thailand at the 2023 world championship.
