Cinema spreads Vietnamese cultural values to the world

Cinema has long been considered a powerful “storyteller” of each country. Besides its artistic and entertainment value, Vietnamese cinema also carries an important mission in bringing the image of the country, its people, its customs and national identity to international friends. In the flow of globalization, this is an effective, convincing and powerful promotional channel.

Beauty in every frame

Throughout its development, Vietnamese cinema has repeatedly left its mark on the world art map. From wartime films such as “The Wild Fields” (Golden Lotus Award, Gold Medal at the 1980 Moscow Film Festival) or “When Will October Come” (ranked among the top 18 best Asian films of all time by CNN), the image of a resilient, humane Vietnam has touched the hearts of international audiences.

Entering the renovation period, Vietnamese films gradually turned towards contemporary life with works rich in poetry and imbued with the identity of the homeland. The film “I see yellow flowers on the green grass” by Victor Vu, adapted from the novel by writer Nguyen Nhat Anh, was not only successful at the box office but also made foreign audiences fall in love with the idyllic, lush landscape of Phu Yen .

Or the film “Brilliant Dark Night” by American director Aaron Toronto and the film “Brilliant Ashes” by director Bui Thac Chuyen. The common point of these two films is that they both put many indigenous imprints into the context of the film. The film “Brilliant Dark Night” is set in a Southern-style funeral. During the funeral, guests who come to say goodbye to the deceased “enjoy” entertaining performances. Meanwhile, the film “Brilliant Ashes” recreates the unique river life of the West. The filmmakers have carefully and painstakingly included many images and details with indigenous imprints such as images of children jumping off monkey bridges to bathe in the river, the deep-sea fishing profession…

Not only art, cinema is also closely linked to tourism . After the movie “Kong: Skull Island” chose Ninh Binh and Ha Long as the setting, the number of international tourists to these localities increased sharply. Although the movie was produced by Hollywood, its impact on promoting Vietnam’s image is undeniable. That shows that just a beautiful frame can become an invitation to tourists from all over the world.

Dr. Nguyen Van Tinh - former Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) said that Vietnamese cinema is truly an entertainment industry with an extremely important role and significance in the cause of building and developing Vietnamese culture. Born in the flames of wars for independence and national unification as well as in the cause of building and developing the country, especially in the context of the country's rise today, Vietnamese cinema has always excellently fulfilled its mission and task in contributing to introducing the extremely beautiful image of the country, the Vietnamese people and the unique and colorful Vietnamese cultural identity to the world. Thereby, contributing to promoting exchanges and cooperation for peace, friendship and sustainable development between Vietnam and the international community.

Need long-term strategy

Despite its great potential, Vietnam still has a lot of work to do to make cinema a true tool for promoting culture. In reality, the number of Vietnamese films reaching the international market is still limited, most of them only stopping at participating in film festivals, few works are widely released. The reasons come from scripts that do not deeply exploit cultural values, the production stage is still fragmented, there is a lack of large capital and well-trained human resources.

In the context of fierce competition, when Korea, Thailand or Japan have turned movies into "tourist guides" and tools to affirm the national brand, Vietnam needs a more systematic strategy. According to experts, the State should continue to have policies to support cinema, from production investment funds to human resource training. Enterprises, especially private film studios, need to boldly invest in scripts that exploit cultural identity in a creative and attractive way while still being close to international tastes.

According to Master Huynh Cong Khoi Nguyen - Director of the Cinema Culture House in Ho Chi Minh City, in order for Vietnamese cinema to better fulfill its mission as a bridge connecting and widely spreading national cultural values in the direction of "internationalizing Vietnamese cultural identity", it is necessary to supplement and perfect mechanisms and policies on cinema as a foundation. Improving the quality of feature films that deeply exploit Vietnamese cultural themes with a focus on improving the cultural level of filmmakers. At the same time, diversifying film distribution and dissemination activities to maximize the value of cinema works and to quickly reach a wide audience on all possible media and platforms, while continuing to strengthen the presence of Vietnamese films in the international arena.

Thus, to promote Vietnamese culture through cinema, it requires the cooperation of many parties: support policies from the state, the commitment of filmmakers, the companionship of businesses and the support of the public. When all factors are combined, Vietnamese cinema can completely shine, becoming a "cultural passport" with great weight in the journey of international integration.
