Comments and forecasts on future pepper price trends

Tan Lap Commune, Quang Tri Province, is taking advantage of its natural advantages of cool climate and fertile red basalt soil to expand pepper growing areas in a sustainable manner. Local authorities have actively supported farmers by providing techniques, new disease-resistant varieties that adapt well to climate change, and linking product consumption. Cooperatives and groups have been established to build the Tan Lap pepper brand, helping farmers feel secure in investing and developing this specialty crop.

Currently, Tan Lap commune has a total pepper area of over 75.9 hectares, mainly distributed in the old areas: Tan Lien (53.7 hectares), Tan Lap (6.2 hectares), and Huong Loc (16 hectares). People intercrop pepper with coffee, bananas, and other crops to optimize land use efficiency. Thanks to favorable natural conditions and good care techniques, pepper here has high productivity, with a household in Tan Hao village reporting an average harvest of 700 kg of dry beans per crop, even reaching 1.2 tons in good years. With pepper prices ranging from 150,000-170,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, this household earns a profit of 120-150 million VND per crop, significantly improving their lives.

However, farmers also face challenges such as pepper diseases and unstable prices, forcing some households to destroy their pepper gardens to switch crops. Thanks to the support of the government and professional sectors in propaganda, technical guidance and pest control, many farmers have persevered in maintaining their pepper gardens. Pepper is now considered a key crop, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction in Tan Lap since 1985.

Price outlook for the second half of October

US President Donald Trump on October 14 once again criticized China, saying that the country is "intentionally" not buying US soybeans and that he is considering "retaliatory" measures. Mr. Trump wrote on social media that the US is considering ending business activities with China related to cooking oil and other commercial elements as a response. He said that the US can easily produce cooking oil itself without having to buy from China.

The comments come as the two countries are still planning a meeting between him and Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite a sudden escalation in bilateral trade tensions.

In early October, Mr. Trump said that China's suspension of purchases of American soybeans would be at the top of the agenda at his upcoming meeting with Mr. Xi Jinping in South Korea later this month.

US soybean producers have been hit hard by the trade war with China, the world's largest importer of the commodity.

China used to import more than half of America’s soybeans, but has recently shifted to South American suppliers like Brazil and Argentina, with no sign of an end to Mr. Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy anytime soon.

Trade wars hurt everyone and the recent developments are deeply disappointing at a time when soybean farmers are facing a growing financial crisis, said Caleb Ragland, president of the American Soybean Association.
