According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), world pepper prices remained quite gloomy last week. No major producing country recorded significant growth. After three consecutive weeks of decline, pepper prices in India and the international market have now remained stable, with no significant changes.
In Vietnam, the new coffee harvest is starting, attracting a lot of capital flows away from pepper. Some traders have sold their pepper inventories to invest in coffee, creating further downward pressure on prices. In addition, the US economy is affected by the government shutdown, causing the commodity market in general, including pepper, to lack growth momentum.
In logistics, shipping costs are on the decline. Despite recent storms disrupting some shipping routes in Asia, container shipping rates to Europe and the Mediterranean have fallen to their lowest since December 2023. This drop is helping to drive down global freight costs.
According to the Vietnam Industry and Trade Information Center (VITIC), many domestic farmers and traders do not want to sell at low prices, so they are still keeping pepper in warehouses. Meanwhile, the weather has also had a strong impact on production. A series of tropical storms in the past month brought heavy rain to the northern and central provinces. In the Central Highlands, prolonged rain during the fruit-bearing stage of pepper plants caused uneven flowering and also made the plants focus more on developing stems and leaves.
