The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry honors the invention of organic metals

Three scientists were awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) - inventions that pave the way for applications in waste gas treatment, carbon sequestration and sustainable materials development.

At 4:45 p.m. on October 7 (Hanoi time), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm announced the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Susumu Kitagawa (University of Tokyo, Japan), Richard Robson (University of Melbourne, Australia) and Omar M. Yaghi (University of California, Berkeley, USA) for their work on Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

This is the third Nobel Prize announced in this year's Nobel Prize season, after the Nobel Prize in Physics and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded 116 times to 197 scientists, from 1901 to 2024.

Last year, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to scientist David Baker of the University of Washington (USA) and two British scientists, Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper, in recognition of their contributions to decoding protein structure.

These findings have enormous potential because proteins are considered the miracle chemical tools of life.

Scientists have created many types of proteins, including those that can be used as drugs, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors.

In addition to the myriad scientific applications, researchers can also better understand antibiotic resistance and create images of enzymes that can break down plastic…/.
