Ha Anh Tuan: 'I am among the top Vietnamese singers in the world'

At the Oscar dome – Dolby Theatre (Los Angeles), Ha Anh Tuan brought “Sketch A Rose” to international audiences, proud to sing in Vietnamese on American soil.

On the night of October 18 (local time), Ha Anh Tuan's Sketch A Rose concert landed at Dolby Theatre (Los Angeles) - the famous home of the Oscar awards ceremony. Not just a simple concert, Sketch A Rose in Los Angeles is also a tribute to the homeland, a proud song of Vietnamese artists in the international space.

"As long as there are Vietnamese audiences, I will sing for a few more decades"

The music night is expected to be an emotional sketch, "painted" with pure Vietnamese melodies. "Tonight, we 'invade' Dolby and turn this place into a Vietnamese music night" , said Ha Anh Tuan.

In the opening, the male singer did not choose familiar hits but performed songs that have become part of the memories of many generations of Vietnamese people.

Performing Pham Duy's compositions, he shared his emotions and pride at being able to sing in Vietnamese in the center of the world's arts. The program opened with a medley of Em bé quê - Bà me quê - Tình ca (Pham Duy), followed by Ngay xua Hoang Thi - Tra lai em yeu - Áo anh chit chi duong hem (poem by Huu Loan).

Ha Anh Tuan was moved by the affection of the audience in the US.

“This is the first time I dared to sing Pham Duy’s work. Why did he act so flirtatiously in the past? Now I don’t dare to do the same. That’s why I used to say I’m one of the best Vietnamese singers in the world. No one can sing Vietnamese as well as Vietnamese people,” Ha Anh Tuan shared.

Right after the opening performance, he could not hide his emotions in front of the 3,400 audience members present in the auditorium: “ I feel proud to be Vietnamese. For me, wherever there are Vietnamese audiences, that is home .” The male singer shed tears amid the applause and cheers of the audience.

“ Being Vietnamese is not just a pride or a blessing, it is also the love of my life, and the love of all of us - the people sitting here ,” he added.

“The clothes are nice but a bit expensive (laughs). I wear clothes by Vietnamese designers and feel extremely handsome and valuable because I am wearing Vietnam. Even if there are difficulties, as long as we are together, we have nothing to worry about.

As long as there are Vietnamese audiences, I believe I will continue to sing for a few more decades. Continue to love music and love Vietnamese artists - of course the decent ones, so that those who are not so decent will become even better,” he shared.

During the duet with famous singer Tuan Ngoc, Ha Anh Tuan quickly changed his outfit because he thought the previous outfit was "modest" compared to his senior. Tuan Ngoc humorously replied: "This time I wore this outfit, next time I'll lend it to you". The famous singer commented that his junior artist is thoughtful, professional, qualified and serious in his profession.

30 songs with 100 members participating

The latter part of Sketch A Rose is full of gratitude and connection. If the beginning of the program was Pham Duy's songs praising the homeland, then at the end, Ha Anh Tuan chose Trinh Cong Son's music to convey the desire for peace and humanity through the medley Ba Me O Ly - Canh Dong Hoa Binh - Xin Cho Toi, receiving long applause from the audience.

He expressed his gratitude to previous authors and remembered overseas singers such as Anh Tu, Ngoc Lan, and Sy Phu through the medley Doi Bo - Mua Tren Bien Desert - Thuo Ay Co Em with famous singer Tuan Ngoc.

The music night also featured Thu Phuong and Phan Manh Quynh. Thu Phuong collaborated with Ha Anh Tuan in Ten Years of Old Love - Twenty Years of Old Love, Just Give It Away - Never and shared her emotions about her 40-year singing journey.

Sketch A Rose also introduced many young compositions such as Hoa Hong, Khach Tho, Em, Tu Dong Tro Tan, along with duets by Ha Anh Tuan and Phan Manh Quynh, including Xuan Thi, Co Chang Trai Viet Len Cay, Nuoc Ngoai, creating a warm atmosphere.

The program includes nearly 30 Vietnamese songs, elaborately staged with the participation of more than 100 members, including artists, bands and orchestras from Vietnam, who came to the US to perform the program.

From Singapore, Sydney, Vietnam to the US, each night of Sketch A Rose shows a different image of a rose. At the Dolby Theatre, Ha Anh Tuan's crew built a giant rose out of metal mesh, combined with modern lighting.

Thousands of fabric rose petals were transported from Vietnam to cover the stage. The highlight was a block of white roses measuring more than 6 meters in diameter, which took more than two months to create. The entire design was tested in Ho Chi Minh City before being brought to the US to ensure accuracy.

The music night featured many Vietnamese artists such as Doan Trang, Thanh Thao, Y Lan, Tuyet Ngan, Minh Tu (White Shirt Trio)... Singer Tuyet Ngan commented that Ha Anh Tuan and his crew had cleverly chosen works that reflected the flow of modern Vietnamese music.

A large audience, including many young people, wore ao dai and conical hats to cheer. Some people flew to the US from distant states and Vietnam to attend. When Ha Anh Tuan saw hundreds of spectators wearing ao dai in the auditorium, he was very surprised and moved.

After the program, he met his high school classmates from Le Hong Phong school who came from Vietnam to congratulate him. They shook hands, recalled their school days and sent their best wishes to the former “class monitor Ha Anh Tuan”.

At the show at Dolby Theatre (USA), Ha Anh Tuan, on behalf of the audience, donated 100,000 USD (about 2.6 billion VND) to the program "Continuing Life with Children", following previous community projects such as "Vietnamese Buds" to support children in special circumstances.

At the end of his journey in the US, the male singer promised to perform a special version called The Rose in winter 2025 in Da Lat.
