The first case of monkeypox variant group 1b was detected on October 17 in this country.
"This is the first time that a new variant of monkeypox has been detected in the Netherlands," the minister said in a letter to parliament. Jan Anthonie Bruijn added that the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) were "closely monitoring the situation".
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported that the infected man had not been vaccinated against monkeypox and had no recent travel history.
The infected man has been quarantined, and local public health authorities are conducting contact tracing. Minister Jan Anthonie Bruijn reassured the public that "the risk of spreading the disease is very low".
According to RIVM, monkeypox can cause painful lesions, fever and fatigue, and is spread mainly through close contact.
