Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Vu Thu Ha worked with Mr. George O. Abungu.

On July 22, Vice Chairwoman of the Hanoi People's Committee Vu Thu Ha worked with an interdisciplinary delegation of the UNESCO World Heritage Center and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) led by Mr. George O. Abungu, Director of Okello Abungu Heritage Consulting Company, Professor at the University of Mauritius.

At the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Vu Thu Ha said that Hanoi has actively prepared survey conditions and arranged necessary supporting infrastructure to serve the research and renovation work of the central axis of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel World Heritage Site.

During the implementation process, the city always adheres to the principles of heritage conservation and receives the accompaniment and support of UNESCO agencies, specialized agencies of Vietnam, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, etc.

Regarding the Project to restore the space of the Main Hall and Kinh Thien Main Hall, after the World Heritage Committee in 2024 approved Decision No. 46 COM 7B.43, agreeing with Vietnam's proposal on the orientation and vision for research, conservation and development of the World Heritage Site of the Central Area of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, Hanoi has actively implemented related work including adjusting the planning of the relic site, preparing archaeological work, digitizing works, etc.

Hanoi will focus all resources to seriously implement the recommendations of the World Heritage Committee in Decision No. 47 COM 7B.92 with the goal of completing and submitting the Report on the conservation status update of the Central Area of the World Heritage Imperial Citadel of Thang Long-Hanoi to the World Heritage Center before February 1, 2026.

The report includes a proposal to restore Kinh Thien Palace - the most iconic structure in the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage Site, a typical space where people across the country can practice traditional rituals, recreate national history, and at the same time, arouse and spread the converging power of the culture that has been forged over thousands of years of history.

Mr. George O. Abungu, Archaeologist, Director of Okello Abungu Heritage Consulting Company, Professor of Mauritius University, expressed his impression of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Restoration Project, showing that the Capital Hanoi in particular and Vietnam in general not only invest in technology and finance, but also pay great attention to professional and human factors.

According to Mr. George O. Abungu, the fact that the Thang Long Imperial Citadel Heritage has many cultural layers buried in the same area is a big challenge, but also contributes to increasing understanding for research and restoration work globally, even changing thinking and awareness about heritage.

Mr. George O. Abungu affirmed that he will cooperate with experts with the city to achieve the set goals in the best way.
