According to the Bangkok Post , the accident happened at around 8:30 am in the corridor between gates 4 and 5 of the domestic terminal. The female passenger was walking on the moving conveyor belt (similar to an escalator but lying flat on the floor) when she tripped over her suitcase and collapsed.

Conveyor system at the airport

The 57-year-old victim was preparing to board a flight to Nakhon Si Thammarat province, according to AP. Photos shared online showed the woman’s leg stuck under the conveyor belt at the end of the aisle. A nearby suitcase had two wheels missing and a yellow comb-shaped barrier connecting the end of the conveyor belt to the floor was partially broken. Airport officials said the suitcase’s wheels were found under the belt.

The medical team had to amputate the victim’s leg above the knee, according to AP. Medical staff at the airport immediately came to his aid and took him to a hospital in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district, but doctors there said they could not reattach his leg. His family then took him to another hospital, where his condition is unknown.

The airport management also stopped the operation of the conveyor system and ordered an investigation to clarify the cause. The airport also apologized to the victim and pledged to provide full compensation.

Accident scene at Don Mueang Airport

BANGKOK POST SCREENSHOT

Don Mueang Airport Director Karant Thanakuljeerapat said staff check the pedestrian conveyor systems every day, including the walkway where the accident occurred on June 29. Mr. Karant said the system was determined to be ready for operation before it was put into operation on June 29.

Don Mueang Airport has 20 conveyor systems installed by Japan's Hitachi in 1996 and regularly maintained by Thailand's Hitachi Siam. It is not yet clear whether the accident was caused by equipment failure or passenger negligence. Mr. Karant said he would investigate thoroughly and announce the results as soon as possible.
