Mr. Hoang Nam Tien – Vice Chairman of the Board ofFPT University – passed away suddenly on the afternoon of July 31, at the age of 57, leaving behind deep grief in the technology, education and publishing communities.

During his lifetime, he was not only a respected technology expert and business leader, but also made a special mark in the field of publishing.

Although he modestly admitted that he was not good at writing and was poor at Literature, he still conquered readers with a series of publications full of academic depth and emotion such as Letter for You, From Ben Hai River to Independence Palace, 13 lectures by Professor Tien on management and leadership, or Applying AI to businesses.

Write to keep memories, continue emotions

Based on his family’s private documents, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien wrote two special books: Letter for You and From Ben Hai River to Independence Palace. These are not just personal publishing projects, but a journey to preserve memories, retell historical stories and spread humanistic values to the community.

Released at the end of March 2024, Letter for You is a collection of more than 400 love letters between his parents – Major General Hoang Dan and Mrs. Nguyen Thi An Vinh – written to each other during the war years.

The book consists of four parts: Returning from Dien Bien Phu, we got married!; Fragrance evokes memories; Letter to you, between the enemy's guns and ours, still firing; Coming back here to be together , corresponding to the time points from when the major general and his wife became lovers, to the days of separation due to war, and finally their old age together.

Readers were moved by the timeless love story, associated with milestones in national history such as Dien Bien Phu in 1954, Khe Sanh in 1968, Quang Tri in 1972, Saigon in 1975... Letter to You is not only a love story of two people, it is also a love story of an entire generation, where love, loyalty and sacrifice are all united. The book quickly became a hit when it was reprinted for the fourth time in less than two months.

Talking about the reason for writing the book, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien said: "When parents are gone, all children can build tombs, build churches, and even use their funeral money to do charity work. I do all of that. When my father passed away, I built a school for the commune in my hometown. When my mother passed away, I used the money to create computer rooms for many places. But I want to do more than that. And what is more than that is the book Letter for You".

Letter to You was honored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as one of the outstanding books in the field of performing arts and literature in 2024. Letter to You has been reprinted 9 times with more than 40,000 copies printed.

Following that success, in early 2025, he wrote From Ben Hai River to Independence Palace – the first battlefield memoir of Major General Hoang Dan. Based on the remaining notes, memoirs and memories, the book realistically recreates major campaigns, especially the fierce battle in Quang Tri in 1972 and the Ho Chi Minh campaign in 1975.

This is not only a personal memoir but also a valuable military document, providing insight into the soldier's mentality, tactical decisions and losses of war.

Connecting communities through books

Not stopping at his own memories, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien also contributed to contemporary knowledge with 13 lectures by Professor Tien on management and leadership and AI applications in business. The two books are highly appreciated by experts because they both condense in-depth knowledge and are easy to access for the general reader, especially young entrepreneurs who are looking for a direction in the wave of digital transformation and artificial intelligence.

Besides writing books, Mr. Tien is also a familiar face in reading inspiration programs and reading promotion talk shows because he especially values the role of reading and always emphasizes this issue in the seminars in which he is a speaker.

He believes that books are the shortest path to success and motivates millions of readers about the importance of learning: "If you want to learn by yourself, first read books."

Mr. Hoang Nam Tien especially values the role of books and spreading reading culture to young people.

He not only talks, but also takes strong action with practical campaigns. At the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, he launched the Bookcase for Children program on November 20 to call for giving books instead of flowers to teachers, thereby contributing to building school bookcases in areas lacking learning materials. For him, "good books are companions, great teachers".

In addition to writing books, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien is also known as a “god of book sales” when he regularly coordinates with publishers to livestream to introduce books. His livestream sessions not only help increase sales but also create a strong ripple effect with the book-loving community.

By the end of 2024, he had sold 1,949 books during his livestream. His knowledge, approachable way of speaking and humane messages made him especially attractive. The media considered him “a phenomenon in the publishing world” - someone who brought books closer to the public, especially the youth.
