Son-in-law took his wife to a hotel on the second day of Tet because of something she said during dinner.

Accordingly, on the second day of the Lunar New Year, he took his wife to her parents' house in Jinan, Shandong to celebrate Tet. After that, everyone helped cook and put the food on the table, mats and sat down to eat.

However, this son-in-law was placed at the children's table. The table is for the children in the house, the dishes are similar but use soft drinks instead of wine or beer. Tieu Truong said he still sat down to eat normally, although not happy but not too upset because he does not like to drink alcohol, and was driving so this is also a reasonable thing.

Although Tieu Truong is the son-in-law, he was assigned to sit at the children's table.

Xiao Zhang added: “In our place, the children's table is not a good place to sit. Only outsiders who don't know how to drink or strangers with whom we have not a close relationship are arranged to sit there. To be honest, I felt a little uncomfortable at that time, but I thought it was the Lunar New Year so I endured it."

Everything was going on normally until an uncle from his wife's family came around with a glass of wine to toasting each table. At the children's table, Tieu Truong, out of habit and common courtesy, raised his glass, intending to toast this uncle. "At that time, I was very happy, thinking that finally there was an elder who cared about me," Tieu Truong recalled.

However, the attitude and words of this uncle attracted the most attention. Tieu Truong said he was extremely shocked and indignant to the point of being unable to bear the attitude of his uncle - the representative of his wife's entire family.

The old man stood in front of everyone and shouted loudly: “Whoever drinks with you, I despise you”. As soon as he finished speaking, the surrounding laughter and noisy drinking suddenly quieted down, as if everyone was “frozen” by the man’s words. Tieu Truong recalled and shared: “At that time, my mind was blank, my hand holding the glass of wine was shaking. How could an old man say such a thing? What did I do wrong?”

At this moment, Xiao Zhang’s father-in-law immediately stood up, pulled him out, and said loudly: “What are you standing here for?” He did not defend his son-in-law, everyone continued to eat and gossip.

"At that time, I felt like a clown. I thought I was a son-in-law, and even wanted to be a good son-in-law, so I didn't mind the long distance, driving from the city to this remote suburb to visit my in-laws, but how could they have the heart to treat me like that?" added Tieu Truong.

Xiao Zhang said he woke up at 5am to pack his things and left at 6am. He drove for 4 hours straight, covering 300km to reach his in-laws' house early in the morning.

He quickly regained his composure and pulled his wife out, took their luggage and said they were leaving. They drove to a nearby hotel, rented a room to sleep, and did not return to the city immediately because the road was quite far.

He shared: “Lying on a strange bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Now, on the second day of Tet, my mother-in-law’s house is nearby, but we can only eat instant noodles in the hotel. My wife said nothing, she has no say in her own home.”

Father-in-law dragged relatives to the hotel to apologize to his son-in-law but failed.

Very quickly, the news that Tieu Truong and his wife were in discord and had to stay at a hotel on the second day of Tet spread throughout the neighborhood. A few days later, his father-in-law went to the hotel to apologize, saying that it was all a misunderstanding and hoping Tieu Truong and his wife would forgive him.

“Misunderstanding? I laughed bitterly. There were so many people at that time. Everyone heard him say clearly: 'I look down on you', but now everyone says it was a misunderstanding,” said Tieu Truong. He said he would not accept any apology or explanation and was determined not to return.

Xiao Zhang said he felt disrespected.

“I would rather stay in a cold hotel eating instant noodles than be there with people who look down on me,” Xiao Zhang insisted. He said he had decided never to go to his in-laws’ house again. The incident had left him feeling extremely disappointed.
