Author Nguyen Dang Viet Cuong with the video work “Color of the Lantern Festival in Viet Nam”. Location: Cho Lon Ward, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Introduction: Every full moon of January, Cho Lon ward (old District 5), Ho Chi Minh City puts on a colorful dress of the Lantern Festival - a traditional cultural feature imbued with the identity of the Chinese community in Saigon. Right from the beginning of the street, the bustling sound of lion drums and the crisp sound of firecrackers echo throughout the alleys. The lion - unicorn - dragon dance troupe gracefully undulates, carrying wishes for peace and prosperity for the new year. Major streets such as Hai Thuong Lan Ong, Chau Van Liem, and Lao Tu become a sea of people flocking to enjoy. Bright red lanterns are hung on both sides of the street, emitting a shimmering light when night falls. Indispensable are the unique art performances such as ancient opera, fire dragon dance, and traditional martial arts performances. The fragrant aroma from the food stalls brings an unforgettable taste of Tet - from chive cakes, sticky rice to sweet and rich sweet rice balls, symbolizing fullness and reunion. Tet Nguyen Tieu is not only a festival, but also a bridge connecting community solidarity, where everyone joins in the joy and sends wishes for a peaceful and prosperous new year.
