This was the second direct attack by the Yemeni militant group on a merchant ship in two days in the Red Sea and surrounding waters. The group said its campaign would continue until the conflict in the Gaza Strip ends.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said three missiles struck the Verbena on Thursday, causing a fire and damaging the vessel.

While the ship's crew was fighting the fire, an aircraft from the US Navy warship arrived to evacuate the injured sailor to a nearby ship for medical care, according to US Central Command.

A day earlier, Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for boat bomb and missile attacks that left the Greek-owned cargo ship Tutor sinking and requiring rescue near Yemen's Red Sea port of Hodeidah. Several media outlets reported that one person died as a result of the attack on the Tutor.

The Houthis also claimed to have directly hit two other vessels in the latest attack. UKMTO said the captain of one of them reported an explosion near the vessel, but no damage or injuries were reported.

The Houthi campaign in the Red Sea has disrupted global shipping, causing delays and increasing costs. The rebels have sunk one ship, seized another and killed three sailors in previous attacks.
