When women tell stories through painting

Ordinary women, who are wives, mothers, and professionals, but still silently nurture a deep love for art. Despite their different circumstances, each person chooses, sticks with, and conveys their feelings through each color and line, as a way to preserve the pure beauty of life.

Colors sing

In the middle of the peaceful countryside of Don Phong, art teacher Nong Thi To Huong is still diligently teaching drawing to her students.

Being a daughter of the Tay ethnic group, born and raised in the mountains, she was nurtured early in the traditional cultural stream. Perhaps that is why in each of her paintings, people always feel the "unique melody". Paintings bearing the mark of To Huong bring to the viewer a strange feeling, it is like a symphony of the mountains and forests, of the soul of a highland woman.

Artist Nong Thi To Huong shared: I came to the association because I love beauty. Teaching helps me listen to the pure world of children, and painting gives me the opportunity to return to my own inner self.

The life of a wife whose husband is a soldier, the months of separation have helped her understand the value of love. It is those quiet moments that become fertile ground to nurture creative emotions. She paints with nostalgia, with the desire to preserve the cultural beauty of her homeland.

For artist Nong Thi To Huong, poetry and painting are just two different ways of expressing the same emotion. “If painting touches the viewer with color and form, then poetry touches with the rhythm and music of words. But both meet at the same point: the beauty of the soul,” Huong smiled, as if speaking for her own philosophy of life and creativity.

Retain childhood in colors

At Phuc Loc Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, art teacher Nong Thi Xoan has become the one who sowed the seeds of dreams for students in the highlands. She not only teaches students how to mix colors and draw, but also teaches them to appreciate beauty, to dream and to believe in good things.

Having been attached to this land with many difficulties for many years, Ms. Xoan is not only an art teacher, but also a second mother to her students. She often mobilizes clothes and warm blankets for the children, and perhaps that love is present in each of her works. In the paintings of artist Nong Xoan, the children of the highlands appear with clear eyes and bright smiles in the midst of vast nature.

Along with painting, Ms. Nong Thi Xoan is also passionate about composing and illustrating many children's stories such as: "The Maple Leaf", "The Legend of the Tay Ethnic Group's Ceremony", "Telling the Story of Widow Island, Ba Be Lake"... In each painting, she conveys the soul of a child and the desire to preserve the national cultural identity.

Ms. Xoan confided: Teaching and painting are inseparable to me. I feel the pure joy and positive energy radiating from the children. It is that innocence that helps me keep my soul young and more sensitive to life and art. Perhaps that is why every time I create, I want to paint about my childhood, as a way of expressing gratitude for the pure emotions that the children have brought.

Looking at the way the students use color and composition, I feel like I am also “renewed” in my creative thinking. Each lesson is like a creative dialogue between teacher and students. They perceive the world in a very different way: innocent, bold and full of creativity. Sometimes their seemingly clumsy drawings give me new ideas for my paintings.

Drawing from the soul

Artist Tran Hang paints from the heart
Artist Tran Hang paints from the heart

For over ten years, painter Tran Hang (in Duc Xuan ward) has been working hard with her palette, with her own space filled with colors. As a member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and the Provincial Literature and Arts Association, for her, painting is not only a passion but also a path that requires patience.

According to artist Tran Hang, a painter needs constant creativity and investment of effort, space, time, finance, etc., so sticking with fine art is a long-distance race.

Ms. Tran Hang came to painting as a way to heal and affirm herself. As an independent woman, she chose to live strongly and follow her own creative path, sometimes calm, sometimes explosive.

In each painting, the warm color scheme, free blocks and liberal composition clearly show the artist's personality: modern, daring to think, daring to express. Through the works of artist Tran Hang, viewers can feel a strong source of energy and sometimes loneliness, the desire to live fully with art.

Artist Tran Hang shared: Painting is the way I talk to myself. Each work is born as if in many different emotions but always towards positive beauty. For me, art is not only the beauty of shapes, but also a journey to discover inner strength. Because only when we understand ourselves, can we paint our own world.
