IELTS co-organizers recently released data related to the IELTS test globally in 2024-2025. In the Academic test alone, the average IELTS score of Vietnamese people is 6.2, ranking 29th out of 40 countries and territories surveyed. This score is similar to last year.

The most common score is 6.0 (21%), followed by 6.5 (18%) and 5.5 (17%). Compared to the world average, Vietnamese candidates' Listening and Writing scores are higher (the world average is 6.4 and 6.0 respectively), while Reading and Speaking scores are lower (the world average is 6.7 and 6.4 respectively).

In terms of score ratio, the most common IELTS score achieved by Vietnamese candidates is 6.0, accounting for 21%. Following that is 6.5, accounting for 18% and 5.5, accounting for 17%. Only 5% of candidates achieved 8.0 or higher; 1% of candidates achieved 8.5 or higher.

Among the 40 countries and territories surveyed, Germany ranked first in terms of average IELTS score with a score of 7.6. Following were Malaysia and Spain, both with an average score of 7.1. Italy ranked fourth with an average IELTS score of 7.0.

Looking at the countries with the highest percentage of test takers scoring 8.5 or above, Germany is at the top with 14%. Following that is Malaysia with 6%, Spain with 5%...

In Southeast Asia, besides Malaysia with an average IELTS score of 7.1, some countries have higher average IELTS scores than Vietnam such as the Philippines with 6.8, Indonesia with 6.7, Myanmar and India both with 6.6...

Vietnam's score is higher than China and Japan, reaching 5.9 and 5.8 respectively.

Adding incentive points and converting English certificates has turned IELTS into a 'golden ticket'. This creates a paradox: Some students who scored 27 points on the high school exam passed the university entrance exam, while others with 29 points still failed because their preparation scores were "inflated".
