Recently, on many Chinese social networking platforms, travel bloggers (people who share travel knowledge) shared videos about some artworks located at the Wild Kingdom tourist area in Lijiang city (Yunnan province, China).
Among them, many statues are shaped strangely, causing controversy such as a centipede statue with a human face, a three-faced girl statue or a statue with deformed limbs.
The series of photos made many viewers feel uncomfortable. Along with that, the incident sparked controversy on social networks in the billion-people country.

According to a Chinese travel blogger with over 1.1 million followers, his experience at the tourist site left him haunted. After stepping through the gate, the visitor saw a human-faced centipede statue outside, made from a metal frame.
Against the gloomy sky, the work gave off a strange feeling. When he got closer, he realized it was made from scrap iron. The gears could even rotate.
"If anyone is faint-hearted, they might feel haunted when coming here. I feel like I'm lost in a horror gallery," the blogger shared.
In response to the wave of criticism, on October 11, a representative of the tourist area officially spoke up to explain. According to this person, most of the photos circulating on social networks were intentionally edited by some travel bloggers to make the scene look darker and more terrifying than it actually is.
Along with that, the representative confirmed that the Wild Kingdom tourist area was originally a project built by a designer named Kieu Tieu Dao at the foot of Ngoc Long mountain with the purpose of giving it to his daughter.

"The author uses his imagination to turn scrap into works of art, turning memories into childhood images. This is where the designer wants to build a fairy tale dream, hoping that lonely people can be healed and find a beautiful reality again," the representative of the tourist area affirmed.
Along with that, the tourist area also recommends that visitors learn carefully about this place before deciding whether to come or not.
However, the statement from the Wild Kingdom tourist area did not satisfy the Chinese online community. Criticism continued to increase.
On the evening of October 13, the tourist area's representative officially issued a public apology and confirmed that they were dismantling some controversial works of art.
“Some of the artworks have attracted public attention and made some visitors feel uncomfortable. We would like to extend our sincerest apologies.
The management board highly values public feedback and makes timely adjustments. In the future, we will continue to listen and absorb comments from visitors with the aim of bringing better works," the management board representative shared.
One of the most criticized works, a human-faced centipede statue, has been removed from its original location. The resort is also considering replacing some new works in their place.
According to figures released by Lijiang Media in March, this tourist area welcomes more than 30,000 visitors each year. The entrance fee is 80 yuan/person (300,000 VND).
