'Dinosaur' Thanh Thuy comes to Japan to play for Gunma Green Wings Club

Last night (September 4), captain of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team Tran Thi Thanh Thuy left for Japan to join the Gunma Green Wings Club for the 2025/2026 season.

Before joining Gunma Green Wings Club, Tran Thi Thanh Thuy had played abroad in Thailand, Taiwan, Türkiye, and Indonesia. Particularly in the Japanese Volleyball League (SV.League), Thanh Thuy had played for Denso Airybees and PFU Blue Cats Club before joining Gunma Green Wings Club, so she was no stranger to the competition environment here.

The Gunma Green Wings club that Thanh Thuy will play for in the 2025/2026 season was established in 1975 with the original name Gunma Bank, then changed its name to Gunma Bank Green Wings and is now shortened to Gunma Green Wings. This team shows its ambition this season when, in addition to recruiting Asian foreign player Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, it also has middle blocker Nasya Dimitrova (Bulgaria) and main blocker Olivia Rozanski (Poland).

According to the registration list for the 2025/2026 season of Gunma Green Wings Club, Tran Thi Thanh Thuy with a height of 1.90 m is also the tallest hitter of the team while Nasya Dimitrova is 1.89 m tall and Olivia Rozanski is 1.85 m tall. Before coming to Japan, Thanh Thuy and the Vietnamese women's volleyball team participated for the first time in the Women's Volleyball World Championship held in Thailand. She and her teammates played hard but could not create a surprise when they lost all 3 matches against Poland, Germany, and Kenya. The most important goal of Thanh Thuy and the Vietnamese women's volleyball team in 2025 is to compete for the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games taking place in Thailand this December.
