(CLO) The Van Dam Xuong Ly fishing festival - a long-standing traditional festival associated with the lives of coastal fishermen in Binh Dinh has just been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.


On December 10, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung signed Decision No. 3944/QD-BVHTTDL to include the Van Dam Xuong Ly Fishing Festival (Nhon Ly commune, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province) in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

Van Dam Xuong Ly Fishing Festival is a traditional festival held annually by local fishermen, starting from the 10th day of the first lunar month.

Similar to the fishing festival in other coastal areas in Binh Dinh province, the Van Dam Xuong Ly fishing festival takes place according to traditional rituals, including: Nam Hai god welcoming ceremony, birth ceremony, praying for national peace and prosperity, fishermen going out to sea safely, and a good fishing season...

In addition to the ceremony, the festival is organized with many activities such as performances of paddle boat, opera, rowing, basket boat racing, playing cards and other folk games. The fishing festival is not only an activity of the coastal villagers but also attracts a large number of tourists, contributing to the preservation and promotion of the unique cultural values ​​of the locality.

According to the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province, the Cau Ngu Festival of Van Dam Xuong Ly is one of the long-standing traditional festivals, associated with the life of coastal fishermen in Binh Dinh, and has become a place to visit, research, and experience the process of formation and development of the Van Chai model associated with fishing activities, seafood processing with traditional ceremonies taking place every year. This is a space of intangible cultural heritage, typical of the type of traditional festival whose unique features are the ritual of worship, singing and dancing, and Bai Choi activities.

The Van Dam Xuong Ly Fishing Festival was formed over 200 years ago, associated with the process of establishing the village, forming a very unique feature in Binh Dinh. The festival is a memory of the space of catching seafood on the sea, containing the cultural beliefs of fishermen in the coastal area through many stages in the historical process.

The festival has been nurtured and built over many generations, creating folk activities of the fishing community through the fishing season, creating exchange activities, sharing experiences of artisans who have been attached to the fishing village since they were very young. The artisans and fishermen of Van Chai Xuong Ly in particular, and fishermen from all regions related to this traditional festival always respect and love; protect and promote the value of heritage; respect the land that contains and preserves heritage and the role of the heritage subject in the economic and cultural life in the area for centuries.

The festival activities have profound humanistic meaning, educating the tradition of solidarity, love for the homeland, and specific responsibility for the fishing village; is a source of pride because it is associated with the spirit of protecting the sea and islands, developing a sustainable economy in the face of challenges of climate change, as well as ups and downs in history. From there, arousing the spirit of continuing the tradition of patriotism in the people; striving in labor and production to build the fishing village into an intangible cultural ecological museum of the sea and islands, a community tourism destination in the process of building Quy Nhon into a cultural center in the South of the North Central and Central Coast regions.
