Terraced fields in the Northwest are one of the attractive tourism products for domestic and foreign tourists.
Land of potential convergence
The Northwest has always been considered a land rich in tourism potential with majestic natural landscapes. The provinces of Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, Son La and Tuyen Quang all possess their own outstanding values, creating a colorful picture of highland tourism. In particular, with more than 30 ethnic groups living together, creating a unique indigenous culture. In addition, traditional festivals, folk arts, and unique cuisine are invaluable resources for developing experiential tourism.
Assessing the potential, Mr. Pham Hai Quynh - Director of the Asian Tourism Development Institute, said that the biggest advantage of Northwest tourism lies in the harmony between majestic nature and diverse cultural identity. According to Mr. Quynh, Northwest tourism is not only about sightseeing but also a journey to experience indigenous culture, from the sound of the flute, dances to the colorful highland market. It is the harmonious combination of natural beauty and cultural depth that creates the special attraction of this land.
It can be seen that this diversity is the basis for the Northwestern provinces to form linked tourism products, bringing rich experiences that cannot be found anywhere else. In fact, in recent years, tourism links between the Northwestern provinces have been promoted with many practical activities. The provinces have also made progress in joint promotion, organizing fairs and cultural and tourism festivals, spreading the image of the Northwestern region more widely. In particular, coordination with major tourist centers such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City helps the Northwestern region expand its tourist market and attract international tourists.
There are many challenges
However, the development of tourism in the Northwest is still not commensurate with its potential. Transport infrastructure, especially inter-provincial connections, is still limited. Many beautiful destinations are difficult to access, making the connecting tours ineffective. Accommodation and services in some places are still fragmented, lacking uniformity, and not up to international standards.
According to Mr. Le Cong Nang - Chairman of WonderTour, a tourism and communications expert, one of the biggest barriers is that regional connectivity is not really effective. Each province has its own products, but the connection to create a seamless journey chain is not clear. In addition, infrastructure is limited, local human resources are not properly trained, leading to uneven service quality. Some places exploit tourism in a quantitative way, with little attention to environmental and cultural conservation, affecting long-term sustainability.
Not only is the nature majestic, the people of the Northwest are very friendly and hospitable.
Sharing the same view, Mr. Pham Hai Quynh said that the Northwest still faces many challenges, especially the lack of regional connectivity. Currently, each province is developing tourism separately, each doing its own thing. This leads to unnecessary competition, duplicate products and reduces overall efficiency. The transportation system, electricity, water and tourism services have not been planned and invested synchronously between provinces. This makes it difficult for tourists who want to travel and explore inter-provincial destinations. The provinces have not coordinated to build common tourist routes, connecting the prominent destinations of each locality into a complete journey. Tourists often only visit a few famous destinations without the motivation to explore the whole region further.
Therefore, according to Mr. Quynh, to overcome the current challenges, it is necessary to synchronously deploy many solutions. First of all, it is necessary to strengthen regional linkages with a common coordination mechanism between provinces to plan and build diverse and attractive tourism products, while at the same time linking with infrastructure and service investment. Instead of competing, each locality should focus on developing specific complementary products, creating a richer and more complete journey for tourists.
Promoting community tourism is also a sustainable direction, both helping to preserve culture and providing livelihoods for people; in which, the government and businesses need to support skills training, build effective management models, and ensure that traditional values are not lost. Along with that is the requirement to improve service quality and human resources, modernize management, and control prices to create solid trust for tourists. Finally, instead of promoting individually, provinces need to join hands to build the "Northwest Tourism" brand, focusing on highlighting the core values of the whole region.
According to Mr. Nang, for sustainable development of tourism in the Northwest, a real linkage strategy is needed, avoiding each person doing their own thing. At the same time, it is necessary to improve infrastructure, train human resources and promote the application of technology and communication to build a green and community tourism brand, bringing the Northwest in line with global trends.
