In the previous match, Messi also scored a double and had 1 assist to help Inter Miami beat opponent DC United with a score of 3-2 on September 21. He continued to repeat this in the away match against New York City FC and the MLS (American professional soccer league) make-up match on September 25.
Messi created a great opportunity for teammate Baltasar Rodriguez to open the score 1-0 for Inter Miami in the 43rd minute after a perfect through pass. In the second half, Messi himself scored 2 goals in the 74th and 86th minutes. In which, the goal to increase the score to 2-0 was from a great assist by Sergio Busquets.
Messi could have completed his hat trick and taken his tally in the MLS Golden Boot race to 24 goals when Inter Miami were awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute. However, Messi gave the opportunity to his teammate and close friend Suarez to make it 4-0 for Inter Miami. Suarez had just returned to action after serving a three-match suspension for his incident in the League Cup final on September 1.
With their third consecutive win, all with Messi contributing goals and assists, Inter Miami has jumped straight to third place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings with 55 points after 29 games. They are only five points behind the leader Philadelphia Union, while still having two games in hand.
The opportunity for Inter Miami to successfully defend the Supporters' Shield title is in the hands of Messi and his teammates. While they have also officially booked their place in the MLS Cup playoffs from October 22 to December 6.
Messi has now scored a total of 32 goals and 14 assists in 38 games for Inter Miami this season. In MLS alone, he has 24 goals and 12 assists. He has surpassed and left his rival Denis Bouanga (Los Angeles FC) 2 goals behind in the race for the 2025 MLS Golden Boot. The third-placed Sam Surridge (Nashville SC) has only scored 21 goals.
