One year after the historic flood: Strong recovery

Exactly one year ago, the great flood caused by Typhoon Yagi hit Tuyen Quang, leaving behind heavy damage and endless pain. Thousands of hectares of crops and fruit trees were wiped out, many houses were destroyed and swept away, and the lives of tens of thousands of people were turned upside down. But after the natural disaster, this land has strongly revived!

Old scars, new life

This day last year, the entire model field of Vinh Bao village, the former Vinh Quang commune, now Kim Binh commune, was covered in mud, bamboo bushes and even large tree stumps were swept away by the flood and washed into the field. The boundaries of the riverbank and the field bank were also erased by the flood without a trace. But today, the remnants of the natural disaster are gone, a green and prosperous color is being woven.

Tri Phu commune, the most severely damaged locality, is now being rebuilt to its original state.
Tri Phu commune, the most severely damaged locality, is now being rebuilt to its original state.

Mrs. Tran Thi Ich's family in Vinh Bao village has just finished harvesting the early-season rice crop and immediately started preparing the land to sow the first crop of winter vegetables this year. With her hands deftly sowing the seeds into the fertile soil that had been carefully prepared, Mrs. Ich recounted as she worked: At this time last year, she collapsed in this very field. 4 sao of early-season rice had turned golden yellow, waiting for the sun to rise to harvest, but after just one night, the flash flood buried and swept it all away. As soon as the water receded, she and many other households in Vinh Bao village supported each other to clean up the fields, improve the land, and start planting new crops, and had a big harvest of winter crops. In particular, the spring and summer crops just passed, the rice grew well, giving a bumper crop. Right on this land, the color of prosperity has returned - Mrs. Ich smiled contentedly.

Not only in Kim Binh, but also in low-lying areas considered to be flood zones, life returned immediately after the flood passed. Mr. Nguyen Dang Khoa, Trai Mit village, Truong Sinh commune said: At this time last year, people in the southern communes of the province were restless, floodwaters were pouring in, while the dike protecting the villagers was leaking. The water in the dike could not be drained, thousands of hectares of rice, sugarcane, and crops were submerged. In this critical moment, the functional forces and militia of the communes in the area stayed up all night and day to reinforce weak points and were ready to respond if bad situations occurred, protecting the safety of people's lives and property.

General Secretary To Lam and provincial leaders directly went to the area to inspect and direct the response and overcoming of the consequences of the dike leakage and breakage. Mr. Khoa said that the damage caused by natural disasters was huge, but with the timely attention and encouragement of General Secretary To Lam, the local authorities and people of the communes joined hands to overcome the consequences, linked up to invest in production, the green color of rice fields, corn fields, and sugarcane fields covered the entire fields.

The Hands of Reconstruction

The revival not only comes from the efforts of individuals but also has a great role of Party committees, authorities at all levels, mass organizations and the spirit of solidarity and mutual love. Immediately after the flood receded, a large-scale reconstruction "campaign" was deployed from the immediate solution of providing food, medicine, clean water to supporting seedlings, livestock and production loans for people to the long-term solution of rebuilding, building, repairing works, roads, schools, stations and arranging, relocating and stabilizing residents... Continuously, directive documents of the Provincial Party Committee, Provincial People's Committee and plans for building resettlement areas were issued, meetings and inspections of provincial leaders with specialized sectors and localities urged to speed up the progress of land allocation, support for housing construction for people whose houses were damaged by natural disasters. The goal is that all households who lost their houses due to natural disasters must be arranged and provided with accommodation as soon as possible.

Comrade Nguyen The Giang, former Vice Chairman of Tuyen Quang Provincial People's Committee, one of the provincial leaders at the time of the flood, was present in most of the dangerous and heavily damaged areas to direct the response and recovery work, recalled: The historic flood in 2024 left extremely serious consequences for the province, the destruction was terrible. Faced with that reality, the province has focused all its resources to help people stabilize their lives. With the spirit of caring for the people as if they were their own relatives, in a very short time, 7 projects to arrange and stabilize the population for nearly 500 households were built.

Mr. Ly Van Dia, Mong ethnic group, Pac Hop village, Tri Phu commune, was allocated land and supported with money to rebuild his house. He happily shared: "Thanks to the attention of the province, local government, villagers and benefactors, my family has a new, solid house." Mr. Dia's family and 13 households of Pac Hop village were supported to move to a new, much safer, flat location. At the new location, the land was also provided by the State, and the cost of building houses was also partially supported. The new houses were built solidly and firmly, and the people were very excited.

One year after the historic flood, all activities of life have gradually returned to their original state, developing more strongly; fields and gardens are green; roads are clear, and bright smiles erase the scars of natural disasters.
