Artisan Vang Thi Mai introduces to international tourists linen products and traditional culture of the Mong ethnic group. |
Help people escape poverty
Artisan Vang Thi Mai, Lung Tam commune, was the first person to bring traditional Mong linen products to the international level. In 2001, realizing that the brocade weaving profession was at risk of disappearing, she mobilized women to establish the Lung Tam Linen Cooperative with a capital of only 13 million VND and 10 members. But with faith and perseverance, Ms. Mai persevered in maintaining the profession, encouraged women to change the designs, and then personally brought the products to introduce everywhere.
From a difficult beginning, Lung Tam linen cooperative has now developed into 9 production groups, with an annual revenue of about 1.5 billion VND, creating stable jobs for nearly 200 women, with an income of 6-7 million VND/month. Linen fabrics, bags and scarves embroidered with Mong patterns from Lung Tam cooperative are present in more than 20 countries in demanding markets such as the EU and the US. Not only maintaining the profession, Ms. Mai also turned flax into a "key to gender equality" attracting poor women, orphans, and skilled elderly people to participate in production. For each product sold, she donates a portion of the wages to artisans to teach the younger generation to preserve the traditional profession. With her persistent contributions, Ms. Vang Thi Mai was honored by Forbes Vietnam magazine in the Top 50 most influential women in Vietnam in 2017.
In reality, many ethnic minority women have asserted themselves with their will and determination to rise up, not only enriching their homeland but also becoming a fulcrum to spread the spirit of daring to think and daring to do in the community. The story of Ms. Luu Thi Hoa, a Co Lao ethnic group, is a vivid proof of that. Realizing that the climate and soil of the Stone Plateau are suitable for many types of endemic products and fruits that are popular with tourists, she established Po My Cooperative to create jobs for local ethnic people by linking production and consumption of endemic agricultural products such as pears, plums, and ginseng. With the main product being mint honey, the Cooperative has cooperated with nearly 200 households, building a stable raw material area, ensuring quality and brand. Each year, Po My Cooperative brings to the market about 4,000 liters of honey and dozens of tons of agricultural products, bringing jobs and stable income to hundreds of women in the highlands.
When mentioning Ms. Lo Thi Phuong, Head of Lang Un village, Kien Thiet commune, the local people affectionately call her "a strange flower" in the mountains and forests. Originally a Thai ethnic group from Dien Bien province, she has a predestined relationship with this land and was elected by the local people as Head of the village. Lang Un has 92 households, more than 70% of the population is Mong ethnic group, their lives mainly depend on growing forests and fruit trees. Faced with low productivity and difficult-to-sell products, Ms. Phuong pioneered in bringing science, technology and digital technology to the people. She guided people to apply the planting and care process, set up a Zalo group "Nhan Dan Lang Un", taught them how to livestream to sell products, and promote agricultural products through social networks. Thanks to this creative approach, Lang Un people have gradually become highland citizens, proactively connecting to the market; many households have an income of 200 - 300 million VND/year, and their lives are getting better and better.

Compassion for the community
Amidst the hustle and bustle of the market economy , there are still women who choose to spread love through persistent and sincere volunteering. Among them, Ms. Bui Thi Thuy, Director of Sao Viet Company Limited , is a typical example of not only being successful in business but also devoting a lot of enthusiasm to community activities. Every year, she spends hundreds of millions of VND to support the Fund for the Poor, the Provincial Humanitarian Fund, giving Tet gifts to disadvantaged households, supporting the construction of houses for poor women, participating in many volunteer programs to help the poor, orphans and vulnerable people in the society in remote villages and hamlets. In particular, she and other benefactors have maintained the charity porridge pot at the Provincial General Hospital for many years to bring warmth and love to poor patients.
Businesswoman Bui Thi Thuy shared: “After nearly 20 years of persistently building a career, I always believe that success is only truly complete when it spreads profound human values. Therefore, I consider volunteer activities as part of the sustainable development strategy of the enterprise, where success is measured by spreading love. I want to help the less fortunate as a way to contribute to building a better society.”
Having worked at the Ha Giang Social Work Center in Tuyen Quang province for nearly 30 years, Ms. Pham Thi Huong is considered the "mother" of more than 60 children in difficult circumstances who are being raised at the center. Day after day, she and 14 other foster mothers quietly take care of and educate abandoned, orphaned, or sick children. For her, it is not just a job but the simple happiness of a mother. Every day, Ms. Huong wholeheartedly takes care of and teaches her children how to communicate, behave, and practice independent living and the awareness to excel in their studies. Thanks to her love and patience, many children who were once shy and timid have now become more confident and sociable.
Sharing about her work, Ms. Huong emotionally said: “Each child here has a different situation, some are abandoned, some are orphans, some have congenital diseases… We only hope to compensate them with the most sincere love. Although it is hard, seeing the children healthy and obedient makes all the hardships worth it.”
The whole province currently has nearly 207 thousand members of the Women's Union, of which 73% are ethnic minority women. In any field of social life, the women have promoted the fine tradition of Vietnamese women who are always proactive, creative, daring to think, daring to do. From practical work to help people escape poverty, to volunteer activities, women in the province have been lighting up the spirit of humanity, spreading love, cultivating solidarity, worthy of being "flowers" in everyday life.
