According to the assessment of the National Competition Commission (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the boom in online tourism and online tour purchases has led to the exploitation of social networks and e-commerce websites to defraud consumers, at an increasing and alarming rate, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.
Accordingly, many tricks impersonate reputable businesses, offer "shocking incentives" to appropriate deposits, and hide unfavorable service fees, causing customers to not only lose money but also have their travel rights and experiences affected.
Recently, a series of cases have been discovered by authorities, such as creating fake websites and fanpages, using images and logos of real hotels and travel companies to deceive customers; running ads on Facebook, Google... creating fake trust.
At the same time, customers are put in a passive position when the tour seller edits and exaggerates the service image, advertises unusually low prices, and then collects a series of additional fees.
Faced with this situation, the National Competition Commission recommends that consumers absolutely do not trust tours, resort combos, or airline tickets with unusually low prices.
All transactions must be verified through official channels such as the business's website, application or public phone number; do not transfer money to personal accounts, must keep documents and invoices as a basis for complaints; report to the authorities if any unusual signs are detected.
On the business side, the National Competition Commission emphasized the need to publicize business licenses, addresses, official contact channels and regularly warn customers about fake sites; invest in security systems, build complaint handling mechanisms, etc.
Consumers lost more than 1,660 billion VND due to online fraud, including buying travel tours.
Vietnam National Tourism Administration cited information from the Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05, Ministry of Public Security ) saying that in the first months of 2025 alone, nearly 1,500 online fraud cases were recorded with losses of more than VND 1,660 billion, many of which were related to tourism services.
According to the Law on Consumer Protection 2023 and the Law on Tourism 2017, consumers can send complaints to the Association for Consumer Protection, the Department of Industry and Trade or directly through the Online Public Service Portal for resolution.
Or when having questions, feedback or complaints, people can contact the consumer advice and support hotline 18006838 (free nationwide) or visit the website http://www.bvntd.gov.vn/khieu-nai for guidance and support.
