Admire two giant umbrellas made from paper flowers by an old farmer in the West

On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2025, Mr. Pham Van Mau, a 60-year-old farmer in Vinh Hoa commune, Cho Lach district, Ben Tre , created two unique umbrellas from paper flowers. The umbrella roofs were designed in the style of French and Thai roofs.

The Thai-style umbrella is 3.8m high and 3.6m in diameter, made from 6 long-legged bougainvillea trees. This product is for sale for 60 million VND.

The French-style umbrella, nearly 4m high and 3.8m in diameter, was also made from 6 multi-colored bougainvillea trees. Mr. Mau sold this umbrella for 70 million VND.

Mr. Mau shared with Dan Tri reporter that, with nearly 20 years of experience growing bougainvillea, he realized that bougainvillea has the flexibility to be bent into many different shapes. In particular, bougainvillea has many colors, creating eye-catching products.

“Since displaying this pair of bougainvillea, many people have visited the garden to visit and take photos. Everyone has praised it, making me very happy and satisfied with my work,” Mr. Mau added.

Each umbrella is made from 6 bougainvillea stems, which take 4 years to grow to the required height. During the process of creating the embryo, Mr. Mau grafted many colors of flowers onto the same stem.

After having the tree stump five years old, Mr. Mau spent another year grafting, shaping and adjusting the tree's roof to have the desired Thai and French style roof shape.

The inside of the umbrella is made of shade net and iron frame to fix the flower branches and prevent leaves and flowers from falling.

According to Mr. Mau, this year, the heavy rains at the end of the year caused the bougainvillea to not reach the expected quality. In order for the flowers to bloom in time for Tet, gardeners must take good care of them, from watering, fertilizing to spraying.

In addition to umbrellas, potted bougainvillea of ​​various sizes is Mr. Mau’s main product. His flower garden has more than 2,000 pots of bougainvillea of ​​various types, priced from tens of thousands to millions of dong.

Ms. Le Thi Thuy Diem, a tourist from Hau Giang , visited Mr. Mau's bougainvillea garden and was very impressed with this unique pair of bougainvillea umbrellas.

Previously, Mr. Mau grew yellow apricot flowers but the quality was not good. Since switching to producing bougainvillea, his family’s economy has become more stable.
