Mu Cang Chai terraced fields are spread over an area of ​​over 2,300 hectares, but are most concentrated in the three communes of La Pan Tan, De Xu Phinh and Che Cu Nha. This is where the Mong people cultivate wet rice and is also a testament to the creativity in cultivating wet rice to adapt to the climate, land and irrigation conditions of the ethnic minorities in the mountainous region.

If you have the opportunity to visit Mu Cang Chai in June, visitors cannot help but be amazed by the beauty of the terraced fields here in the flooding season.

Not as straight as the fields in the alluvial plains of the delta, the rice fields in the highlands of the Northwest in general and Mu Cang Chai in particular are stacked on top of each other from layer to layer like steps reaching up to the blue sky.

To have terraced fields, the Mong people in Mu Cang Chai must choose lands on hillsides and mountain slopes with a fairly large area, moderate slope and favorable location to receive rainwater and stream water.

Although the work of clearing land and bringing water to the terraced fields here is more difficult, in return, in addition to bumper crops, the people here also create a majestic natural wonder.

During the flooding season, people build dams, build embankments, and lead water into the fields to prepare for plowing, sowing, and transplanting rice.

Everywhere you see terraced fields layer upon layer spread across the hills.

The reflection of the water mixed with the sunlight and the green of the young rice plants creates a mesmerizing picture on the terraced fields with the image of the Mong people enthusiastically planting and harvesting.

With intelligent creativity, diligent and hard-working hands, and collective strength, the highland people have created a unique and majestic system of terraced fields.

Not only does it help people have a stable life and push back poverty, but the combination of the beauty of terraced fields and unique indigenous culture also helps Mu Cang Chai become an attractive tourist destination.

In 2007, terraced fields in the three communes of La Pan Tan, De Xu Phinh and Che Cu Nha - the terraced fields paradise of Vietnam - were recognized by the State as National Monuments.

Not only that, Mu Cang Chai was also voted into the top 10 most beautiful terraced fields in the world .

In order to promote tourism as well as the beauty of terraced fields, every year Mu Cang Chai district organizes "flooding season" tourism activities to attract a large number of tourists to the highlands here.

In order to honor the Mu Cang Chai terraced fields and promote the cultural values ​​of the Mong people, while raising awareness of heritage conservation and attracting tourists, since 2015, Yen Bai province has organized many activities including goat fighting, rice pounding festival, food fair, paragliding "Flying over the golden season" and "Flying over the pouring water season" at Khau Pha peak, Mam Xoi hill and many other cultural activities.

Along with friendliness, warmth and hospitality, the flood season is helping Mu Cang Chai become more beautiful in the hearts of tourists.
