Traditional art: Innovation to not "fall out of step"

In the midst of modern life, traditional art forms have been facing the requirements of innovation in both artistic thinking and organization and implementation methods. With the combination of digital technology, education and tourism, along with the creative efforts of artists, traditional art in Thanh Hoa has been proving that heritage is not only to be preserved but also to shine in today's life.

Dong Anh folk songs and dances are increasingly becoming closer to the public.

In recent years, Lam Son Art Theater has staged many art programs combining tradition and modernity, bringing old plays to the stage with new performances, modern sound and light, and more elaborate costumes. Some excerpts of Cheo, Tuong, and Cai Luong shared on social networking platforms such as YouTube, TikTok... have reached tens of thousands of views, attracting young people. The images of Cheo, Tuong, and Cai Luong artists on digital platforms are gradually becoming closer to the audience, including young people of Gen Z.

People's Artist Han Van Hai, Director of Lam Son Art Theater, pointed out: "Traditional art cannot continue to follow the beaten path, repeating old patterns. First of all, each artist needs to renew their thinking, re-evaluate the core values of art, which is to reflect the breath of the times, the voice of the people, the aspiration towards beauty: truth - goodness - beauty. To do that, it is necessary to promote traditional art from a contemporary perspective. Innovation does not mean losing identity. The root of traditional art is the soul of the nation." At the same time, he emphasized the importance of training the next generation of young people, both in artistic skills and the spirit of preserving heritage.

Along with performing activities, Lam Son Art Theatre has actively cooperated with localities and schools in educating traditional arts in schools and communities. Up to now, many extracurricular programs have been organized in a number of schools, performing traditional arts, exchanging with artists at the theatre; supporting folk song, tuong, cheo clubs... in practicing and performing in residential areas in the province. Thereby contributing to creating a young generation that understands and loves more the values of traditional arts. Artist Le Thi Canh, Vien Khe Ngu Tro Club (Dong Son Ward), said: “Without young audiences, traditional art will age with the old audiences. Over the years, with the efforts of club members, we have received attention and support from all levels and sectors, especially artists and actors of Lam Son Art Theater. Still the same folk songs and dances, but with the innovation of performance methods, combined with digital technology, Vien Khe Ngu Tro Club has more opportunities to preserve and promote the value of cultural heritage.”

Another mark of innovation is the connection of traditional arts with tourism and festivals. In cultural and tourist events such as Lam Kinh festival, Ba Trieu temple festival, Le Hoan temple festival, Trinh Palace festival, Doc Cuoc temple blessing festival... Cheo and Tuong plays are elaborately staged, attracting the public. Bringing traditional arts to community cultural spaces has helped this art form become more lively, closer and rich in experience.

However, the innovation of traditional arts has been facing many difficulties. Meanwhile, the successor team is still small, and the training of young artists is difficult due to the attraction of other professions. Without better treatment and support policies, the preservation of traditional arts is likely to slow down. In addition, some traditional art clubs in the province have only stopped at "renewing the form" but have not made any breakthroughs in content, making the performance activities not really attractive.

People's Artist Han Van Hai shared: “Each stage work, each art program is a product bearing the mark of the artist's intelligence, soul and emotions. For traditional art forms, creativity is not only expressed in the script, music , staging, but also in the way of conveying messages to the public. In recent years, many art programs of Lam Son Art Theater have boldly combined art forms: from folk to modern, from drama, dance, music to multimedia projection images. Thanks to that, the program becomes more attractive, modern while still preserving national identity”.

It can be said that traditional art in Thanh Hoa is in an important transformation process. Innovation to avoid "falling out of step" is not only the most effective way to preserve but also a way to affirm the sustainable value of national culture in modern life. When excerpts of Cheo, Tuong, and folk songs not only resound on the theater stage but also appear on social networks, in schools, at festivals, tourist attractions... then traditional art will truly be alive, connected and spread to the public today. That is also the direction for traditional art in Thanh Hoa to continue to stand firm in the flow of the times, both preserving the core of national culture and keeping in tune with the breath of contemporary life.
