I'll go on duty and then come back to you and your mother!"
At dawn on June 13, the small alley leading to the house of Major and Martyr Hoang Trung in residential group 5, Tan Hoa ward, Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak province, was crowded with people, comrades and relatives coming to bid him farewell on his final journey before returning to his homeland.
In the small house where the funeral was held, the image of Ms. Tran Thi Sen (Major Trung's wife) hugging her husband's mementos and crying silently made everyone choke up. For her, until today, she still cannot accept the bad news that after a night on duty, her husband has gone forever.
Mr. Trung and Ms. Sen were formerly officers and employees of the Ministry of Public Security's Cultural School 3. After the unit was downsized, Ms. Sen was transferred to work as an employee of the Dak Lak Provincial Police Guest House, and Major Trung was transferred to work as a police officer in Ea Ktur commune.
The unit is dozens of kilometers away from home, often having to stay on duty at night to ensure security and order in the area the unit is responsible for. For his family, he is also the main breadwinner, supporting his elderly mother, sick wife and two young children of school age.
According to her family, Ms. Sen has suffered from stage 4 kidney failure for many years but still tries to work to earn a salary to pay for medicine. Her two children, who are in grades 9 and 11, and her 69-year-old mother are also taken care of by Mr. Trung.
“The couple worked hard to build this house, and borrowed the land from my grandparents. Yesterday, before leaving for duty, he told me that he would come back to me and my child after finishing his work. I never thought he would be gone forever,” Ms. Sen choked up.
Still not believing that her husband has passed away, Ms. Pham Thi Nhu Phuong, wife of Martyr, Captain Ha Tuan Anh (police officer of Ea Tieu commune) has been crying these past few days every time her comrades and relatives come to visit. Relatives said that Phuong and Tuan Anh met in 2012 and got married in 2019. Their first daughter, over 3 years old, is the family's comfort.
Phuong works as a teacher near home to take care of her parents-in-law because Tuan Anh often works away from home. “At the end of 2022, he was transferred to work at the Ea Tieu Commune Police. There is a lot of work at the unit, so he often has to leave early and come home late. Being a workaholic, he still takes advantage of his free time to help his parents with farming and cleaning the house,” Ms. Phuong said tearfully.
Continuing, Ms. Phuong said that for more than a week now, her husband has been on night duty continuously at the request of his superiors. “On the evening of June 10, our daughter fell ill, so he came home to cook, feed her, and give her medicine. Before leaving, he told me that after working at the office tonight, he would come back to take me for a check-up and finish the garden that my grandparents had just given me to increase my income. But he left me and my daughter,” Ms. Phuong choked with tears.
Sharing the same pain, over the past few days, the mother of Major and Martyr Tran Quoc Thang seemed to have no more tears to cry for her son. By the coffin, she sat silently looking at the portrait of her son with incense smoke rising, making everyone's heart ache.
For many years, Thang has always worked away from home. Since he was transferred to Ea Tieu Commune Police, Thang's family's dilapidated house promised to save up his salary to repair it for his mother. "On the afternoon of June 10, after dinner, my son said that in a few months he would save up enough money to repair the house for his mother. Before leaving, he told his mother to try to sleep early and that he would come back after finishing his work. But that time I didn't get to see him again," Major Thang's mother choked up.
Comrades always side by side, people stand side by side
The incident of 4 commune police officers who died while on duty has left behind much pain for their families and relatives, and endless grief for their colleagues and people. However, in the midst of that grief and pain, in the past days, the families of the comrades have also been given warmth because they always have their comrades by their side and the people by their side. After the incident, leaders from the central to local levels, especially their comrades and police officers from all units, have always been on hand to help and encourage them.
A long-time friend of Major and Martyr Hoang Trung's family has been by his family's side for the past few days to help with the funeral, saying that Trung and his wife were in very difficult circumstances. His wife was sick, but they lived very affectionately and closely. "We were deeply saddened to hear that Trung had suddenly passed away while the burden of the family was still unfulfilled. We love Trung, his old mother, and his young children, and we will try to help the family in any way we can," said Major and Martyr Trung's friend.
Sharing the pain and loss, Mr. Nguyen Tien Hai (a resident of Ea Ktur commune) said that the sacrifice of the police comrades was a great loss not only for the police force but also for the people. “Since the regular police comrades came to the commune, the security and order situation in the locality has clearly changed. There are no more scenes of drunken youths fighting as much as before, petty theft has decreased a lot… As a resident, I would like to respectfully send my condolences to the families of those comrades as well as the police force,” Mr. Hai shared.
Coming to burn incense in memory and visit the families and relatives of the four officers and soldiers, Senior Lieutenant General Luong Tam Quang, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of Public Security, acknowledged the sacrifices of the comrades while performing their duties, for the peace of the people. He shared the great losses and wished that the relatives of the comrades would try to overcome the pain and stabilize their lives.
“The Party, the State, and the Ministry of Public Security always pay attention to and implement well the regime and policies for the sacrificed police officers, sharing the pain so that the relatives of the families can soon overcome this great loss. We request that the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Committee, and the Dak Lak Provincial Police pay attention and create favorable conditions to help the families of the soldiers overcome difficulties, soon stabilize their lives, and have appropriate and timely policies for those with meritorious services,” Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang emphasized.
