On April 30, 1975, the Independence Palace (now Reunification Hall) was the place where power was transferred from the Republic of Vietnam government to the revolutionary government, ending the war and unifying the country.

In 1976, the Independence Palace was recognized as a special national monument.

Le Nguyen Hai Bang (12 years old) and his family went to Thong Nhat Hall to film a video of him playing the zither on April 30. "When I get to play the zither here on this meaningful national holiday, I feel very proud and moved," Hai Bang said.
