Everyone loves photo editing, China's AI application is 'doing well'

There are 280 million monthly users of AI photo editing app Meitu, of which 98 million come from markets outside mainland China.

On August 18, Meitu - a popular photo editing app headquartered in Xiamen (Fujian province, China) - announced its business results for the first half of 2025 with total revenue reaching 1.8 billion yuan (NDT - about 252.4 million USD), up 12.3% over the same period last year.

Adjusted net profit attributable to shareholders was 467 million yuan, up 71.3 percent year-on-year, the company said, citing the growth in revenue and profit mainly due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI), an increase in global subscribers, and rapid expansion of its subscription-based products in the imaging and design space.

In the first half of 2025, Meitu's image and design products business continued to maintain strong growth momentum, reaching 1.35 billion yuan (accounting for 74.2% of total revenue), up 45.2% year-on-year. As of June 30, Meitu's paid subscribers reached a record 15.4 million yuan, up more than 42% year-on-year.

Meitu's global monthly active users (MAUs) reached 280 million, up 8.5% year-on-year, of which 98 million came from markets outside mainland China (up 15.3%).

During the period, Meitu's research and development (R&D) expenses stood at 450 million yuan, up 6.1%. Its core technology center - Meitu Imaging and Vision Lab (MT Lab) - currently owns 463 granted patents and 317 software copyrights in the field of AI.

Founded in 2008, Meitu has evolved into an AI-based technology company, providing image editing tools and beauty management services with the goal of helping users "be more beautiful" through digital platforms.

Meitu's strength lies in its friendliness and ease of use: even those who are not very knowledgeable about complex photo editing techniques like Photoshop can still quickly create beautiful pictures with just a few steps.
