(CLO) The United States, Britain, Canada, Norway and Switzerland on November 27 jointly expressed concern about the escalating violence in Mozambique, a southern African country currently embroiled in weeks of post-election protests.

"We call on the Government of Mozambique to maintain the role of the security forces to protect the people of Mozambique," the countries said in a joint statement.

Public anger has grown following last month's disputed election results, which sparked protests from opposition supporters.

The opposition is contesting the election results, claiming that the victory of the Frelimo party, which has ruled Mozambique since 1975, was fraudulent.

According to the election results, the Frelimo party will continue to govern with candidate Daniel Chapo, who succeeds President Filipe Nyusi to become Mozambique's fifth president since the country's independence from Portugal.

Video shared on social media on November 27 shows an armored vehicle plowing into a crowd of protesters in the capital Maputo and hitting a woman.

Responding to the incident, the Mozambican military issued a statement expressing deep regret over the accident, saying that the vehicle in the convoy "accidentally hit a civilian".

Last week, local monitoring group Plataforma Decide said at least 67 people had died in unrest between mid-October and mid-November.
