Most notably, the film “Hortar Hill: The Return of the Black Heresy” (directed by Luong Dinh Dung) has just announced that it will stop showing after 9 days with a revenue of just over 2 billion VND. Released in theaters since September 26, the horror film failed to attract audiences.
Despite investing in a meticulous setting, "Hill of Torture" still could not save its failure due to negative reactions from viewers.
In the same situation, the movie “Pawn Shop: Play and Accept” (starring Cat Phuong) became a box office shock with only 153 million VND after its release. The movie was criticized as “terrible”, with forced content and awkward acting. In addition, the conflict between Cat Phuong and director Hoang Anh Duy made the work even more noisy, the producer even announced to seek legal intervention.
Meanwhile, “Wait, Dream” – an independent project about an elderly person pursuing his dream of becoming a tattoo artist – only earned 309 million VND after its screening. Despite its humanistic message, the film was criticized for being long-winded, slow-paced and lacking in climax, making it difficult for young audiences to empathize.
Another case is “Closing the Order!”, a film that used AI technology to replace Miss Thuy Tien, which earned 5.1 billion VND in revenue before leaving theaters. Despite attracting attention for its technological elements, the film was criticized for being “fake, soulless” and having bland content.
These successive failures show the huge gap between creative expectations and popular tastes. As audiences become more demanding, strange ideas or modern technology are no longer enough, what they still need is good stories, real emotions and professional quality. The year 2025 is therefore a warning to Vietnamese filmmakers: audiences are ready to support new things, but never easy with bad things.
