On September 8, Mr. Nguyen Van Sony, residing in Minh Tien hamlet, U Minh Thuong commune, was busy harvesting 15 hectares of giant freshwater prawns. He said his family sold nearly 800 kg, with an estimated profit of 50%.
"Shrimp prices have increased sharply this year due to higher demand from the Chinese market than in previous years. If last year at this time I sold for about 120,000 VND/kg, now it is nearly 160,000 VND/kg," said Mr. Sony.
In Vinh Binh commune, Mr. Tran Thanh Ba has just sold 450kg of giant freshwater prawns to traders, earning a significant profit.
According to Mr. Ba, this year many households are hesitant to stock shrimp due to unfavorable weather, reduced output, while increased demand causes traders to rush to collect, pushing shrimp prices up.
"With the current price, everyone is making a profit. My family alone, after deducting expenses, still has a profit of about 40%. We are renovating the pond to continue farming. In addition to giant freshwater prawns, many households also raise whiteleg shrimp and tiger prawns to increase their family income," Mr. Ba said excitedly.
It is known that currently the best quality giant freshwater prawns (15 pieces/kg) in communes such as U Minh Thuong, An Bien, An Minh are purchased at 145,000 - 160,000 VND/kg; the 4-piece type (25 pieces/kg) also maintains a good price. Compared to the same period last year, the price increased by 50,000 - 60,000 VND/kg.
Thanks to shrimp, people's lives here are increasingly stable, many households have become well-off and continue to stick with the sustainable production model on this fertile land.
