According to data from the first 8 months of 2023 of the Ministry of Health , Vietnam has about 249,000 people infected with HIV, of which about 230,000 people infected with HIV have been detected and are still alive.
In recent years, with efforts to comprehensively and effectively implement HIV/AIDS prevention and control solutions, Vietnam has reduced the number of new infections and deaths from HIV/AIDS by more than two-thirds compared to 10 years ago. The HIV infection rate has decreased among injecting drug users (from 28.6% in 2004 to 12.1% in 2021) and female sex workers (from 5.9% in 2002 to 2.5% in 2022).
Vietnam maintains the goal of controlling the rate of HIV infection in the community at below 0.3% (currently estimated at 0.26%), reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS on health and socio -economic development.
However, HIV/AIDS is still complicated and the risk of resurgence is high. Monitoring data shows that the HIV/AIDS epidemic is on the rise in some localities; the HIV infection rate among drug addicts is still above 12.1%; in particular, the HIV infection rate among men who have sex with men has tended to increase very rapidly in recent years (from 3.95% in 2011 to 5.1% in 2015 and 12.5% in 2022).
