The Central Endocrinology Hospital has just admitted a 41-year-old female patient with thyroid cancer from Phu Tho , who was hospitalized with a very large goiter causing pressure on the neck area, seriously affecting her daily activities.
The patient was diagnosed with Basedow's disease - a typical autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland since 2019 and was periodically treated with synthetic antithyroid drugs at the Central Endocrinology Hospital. Recently, the patient's neck grew rapidly, the goiter grew huge, causing difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, greatly affecting aesthetics and sleep.
Test results showed that thyroid hormones were in a euthyroid state , however, the concentration of TRAb and Anti-TPO antibodies in the serum was high. Diagnostic ultrasound showed that the thyroid gland was very large in volume, difficult to determine the exact size, the parenchyma was uneven, and there were many cysts.
Dr. Le Thi Viet Ha, Head of the Department of Thyroid Pathology, Central Endocrinology Hospital, said that with the condition of neck deformity due to giant goiter, the patient had been consulted for surgery many times but could not perform it because the goiter was too large, had strong vascular proliferation, and was difficult to achieve optimal conditions before surgery. Currently, the patient's general condition is more stable and she wishes to have surgery to remove the goiter.
According to Dr. Le Thi Viet Ha, this is a typical case, showing the complexity in treating thyroid diseases, especially in cases of giant goiters causing compression and seriously reducing the quality of life.
Through this, Dr. Le Thi Viet Ha recommends that people with abnormal symptoms in the neck area such as rapid neck enlargement, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, prolonged hoarseness or signs of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism should go to the hospital early for consultation, diagnosis and timely treatment.
“Early detection - standard treatment - modern techniques” is the key to help people with thyroid disease improve their quality of life and prevent dangerous complications.
