Female student overcomes serious illness, heading to A80 ceremony in a special way

Towards the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2, female student Thai Huyen Trang (from Nghe An) who suffers from leukemia made hundreds of hairpins and key chains shaped like the national flag to raise funds to support children with cancer.

In 2019, 13-year-old Thai Huyen Trang had to face leukemia. After 12 rounds of chemotherapy with many side effects, Trang embarked on an extremely difficult journey of stem cell transplantation. As the only child in the family, she did not have the opportunity to receive a stem cell transplant from a completely HLA-matched source of blood relatives.

Doctors from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion advised the family to have their child transplanted from community umbilical cord blood stem cells stored at the institute's Stem Cell Bank.

Although this is a complicated transplant technique, with the dedicated care of the medical staff of the Stem Cell Transplant Department, Trang persevered for 2 months in the transplant room to return home.

The treatment for leukemia forced Trang to stop going to school for nearly 2 years. However, the studious girl tried to learn the 8th grade knowledge on her own and was only 1 year behind her friends.

Returning to grade 9 after nearly 2 years of absence, Trang still passed the entrance exam to the selective class of Do Luong High School ( Nghe An ). Not only satisfied with the excellent student results in grade 10, Trang also continued to strive to become an excellent student in the last 2 years of high school.

Trang diligently makes national flag-shaped keychains every day.

No matter what time, Trang is always passionate about learning and constantly tries to overcome her circumstances.

Ms. Truong Thi Hoa, Trang's mother, confided that Trang discovered her illness while preparing for the gifted student exam. After being hospitalized and receiving 5 blood transfusions, her daughter became even more determined not to give up on the exam. Despite her poor health, Trang still ranked 2nd in the district-wide gifted student math exam.

Later, when she entered high school, Ms. Hoa did not want her child to try too hard, so she did not participate in the excellent student competitions. However, her studious spirit and determination to succeed were always recognized by teachers and admired by friends.

Therefore, in grade 12, Trang became one of the few students of the school to be admitted into the Communist Party of Vietnam .

As a reward for all the efforts of that resilient girl, Trang achieved a fairly high score of 26 points in the high school graduation exam. Recently, Trang received notice of admission to the Talented class, Mathematics Pedagogy, Vinh University. Trang has taken another step on the journey to reach her dream of becoming a Math teacher.

Besides the spirit of studying hard, Thai Huyen Trang always wishes to share love and reach for good things. After the stem cell transplant, Trang was unable to return to school for a long time due to her health and weak immune system.

The 15-year-old girl has turned the boring days into valuable ones. She knitted hats and scarves with the hope of helping children with cancer keep warm and cover their bald heads. Every time she went for a check-up at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, she brought those loving gifts to give to the children undergoing treatment.

Later, because she had to spend time studying for her high school entrance exams, Trang felt a bit sad because she had to temporarily stop knitting and giving small gifts to sick children.

As soon as she had free time while waiting for her graduation exam results, Trang continued crocheting, making hundreds of hairpins, key chains and brooches in the shape of the national flag. She sent those meaningful products to the Network for Children with Cancer and the Network helped her sell them to raise funds to support children with cancer.

The key chains and hairpins with the red flag and yellow star not only carry the love and aspiration for a meaningful life of a girl who once faced cancer, but also join in the patriotic epic during the important days of the nation.

Specialist II Doctor Vo Thi Thanh Binh, Head of the Stem Cell Transplantation Department, National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, who accompanied Trang throughout the treatment process, shared that Trang had faced cancer since she was 13 years old, but she bravely underwent a stem cell transplant from community umbilical cord blood, a more complicated transplant technique than a completely HLA-matched transplant of the same bloodline. And the result is that 5 years after the transplant, Thai Huyen Trang is not only healthy but also passed the university entrance exam and does useful things for the community.
