Recently, Associate Professor Dr. Truong Ngoc Kiem, lecturer at Hanoi National University, shared his concerns:
“For a long time now, I have been teaching and observing how students dress to class and I cannot help but wonder. I don’t know if I am too old-fashioned and outdated to understand the fashion style of Gen Z today or if society is so open and easy-going that even basic cultural and ethical values are being eroded.
Although we know that today's society is dynamic and emphasizes convenient dressing, we still need to distinguish between school, play, and sleep. Each situation requires neat, clean, neat, and appropriate dressing.
Some boys wear shorts (not shorts) and flip-flops to the lecture hall; some girls wear their home clothes - no different from pajamas, except that they have a school jacket hanging loosely on the outside. Then there are the countless 'unattractive' ways of dressing of young people that make teachers like me sometimes shake our heads in dismay, for example, a thin white shirt but brightly colored underwear...
It's okay for boys to wear shorts and tank tops at home or at the gym, just like it is okay for girls to wear tank tops or cutout shirts that expose their backs/belly when going out, but it's not appropriate to bring that look to class.

It is necessary to distinguish between 'style and personality' and 'sloppy, sloppy, and careless'. In the past, when we went out, our parents, teachers, and even our neighbors always reminded us to dress neatly, 'keep clean when hungry, keep fragrant when ragged'.
But now it seems like everyone just 'turns a blind eye' because 'it's a personal matter'; thus causing social norms regarding value systems to be turned upside down.
The elders taught that 'teeth and hair are the cornerstones of a person', implying the importance of taking care of appearance to create sympathy in social interactions, show respect for oneself and others, and show neatness, lifestyle, qualities, personality, 'inner' beauty and culture of a person.
Hopefully, young people today will be active, confident, 'integrate but not dissolve', not forget traditional values, cultural norms to always be beautiful, civilized and polite in all circumstances".
The sharing of Mr. Truong Ngoc Kiem after being posted on social networks has attracted a lot of attention. Many people agree with the teacher's concerns. In particular, many lecturers from other universities share this situation.
“What you shared is true, it turns out this happens everywhere, with young people all over the world,” commented a lecturer at a university in Hue.
Another lecturer working at a university in Da Nang expressed: “Now we probably have to either accept young people like that, or follow the school’s regulations. My place is the same.”

Speaking to VietNamNet , Associate Professor Dr. Truong Ngoc Kiem said that after the post, many of his colleagues who are lecturers at universities across the country also agreed and shared their views on how students choose their classroom uniforms today. This shows that the situation is not only happening in a particular environment but also in many universities across the country. “The rules will always be rigid and teachers cannot remind students everywhere at this age. The most important thing is still the self-awareness of students and young people to change together,” said Mr. Kiem.
