Collapsed after hearing the news of cancer

Ms. Duong Thi T. (56 years old, residing in Ben Quan commune, Quang Tri province) was diagnosed with uterine cancer 9 years ago. Although she went to a medical facility for treatment, the disease has still metastasized to her lungs. Since June 2025, Ms. T. has been transferred to the Oncology Department, Quang Tri General Hospital for treatment.

“When I first found out I was sick, I was very sad. Thanks to the encouragement of my family, friends, relatives and the care of the doctors, I regained my spirit to fight this terrible disease,” Ms. T. confided.

Although she said she had regained her spirits, deep inside, Mrs. T. still felt sad and disappointed. She clearly remembers: “When the doctor told me that after chemotherapy my hair would fall out, I was very sad. After that, even though I had a little hair left, I still wanted to keep it, but every time I combed it, it fell out again. Only then did I decide to cut all my hair off.”

After losing all her hair, every time she returned from the hospital, Ms. T. mainly stayed at home, limited contact with other people, and refused all invitations to meet her friends.

Diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in early 2025, Ms. Cao Thi N. (47 years old; residing in Kim Phu commune, Quang Tri province) went to Hanoi for treatment. Up to now, Ms. N. has requested to return to the Oncology Department, Quang Tri General Hospital for treatment to be closer to home.

During her medical examination and treatment in Hanoi, Ms. N. encountered many situations more difficult than hers. Sympathizing with them, before undergoing treatment, Ms. N. intended to donate her hair to make wigs to give to people undergoing cancer treatment.

“The day I decided to donate my hair was also the first day I started chemotherapy. The hair donation place opened at 8:30, but I started treatment at 8:00, so I couldn’t donate my hair. About 10-11 days after the first chemotherapy session, my hair started to fall out. After about half a month, all my hair fell out. I was so sad and in so much pain,” Ms. N. recalled, sobbing.

Help patients maintain a stable mentality and confidently fight the disease

To gain more confidence and motivation to fight the disease, every time she returns home, Ms. N. goes to the school where she works to meet her colleagues and students. For Ms. N., talking with colleagues and witnessing the innocent smiles of the students helps her feel much more excited.

Both Mrs. T., Mrs. N. and other cancer patients clearly feel that “teeth and hair are the root of a person”, so they all hope for the day they will get well so they can have their hair as long and graceful as before. Recently, when she heard that the Oncology Department and a benefactor would give her a free wig, Mrs. T. was very excited, tossing and turning all night waiting until dawn.

After receiving and putting on the wig, Mrs. T. and Mrs. N. both took out their phones to look at themselves with smiles on their faces. In her emotion, Mrs. T. thanked the hospital and the benefactors, saying: "I will continue to fight this disease with the highest spirit and the most resilience."

According to Dr. Nguyen Van Phong - Head of the Oncology Department, Quang Tri General Hospital, the department is currently treating 176 cancer patients. Usually, when the disease is first detected, most patients fall into a state of depression, sadness and are in great need of encouragement, support and companionship from the medical team, relatives, friends as well as the community. Only a few patients maintain a strong mentality and confidence to face and fight cancer.

Dr. Phong said that in recent years, cancer treatment has made many advances. For example, with thyroid cancer, if detected early, the treatment process can help patients recover and have a life span almost like a normal person. In breast cancer patients, early detection and treatment according to the regimen can give a life span of over 10 years up to 90%. Similarly, for colorectal, stomach, ovarian cancer... there have also been many achievements to help prolong the time and quality of life.

To help patients have more choices and improve treatment effectiveness, the Oncology Department always strictly adheres to the protocols of the Ministry of Health, and at the same time, updates new advances in world medicine.

Dr. Phong emphasized that cancer treatment is a combination of many factors, in which the patient's optimistic mentality and confidence play a particularly important role. He shared: "When receiving meaningful gifts such as wigs, bras, etc. as in the program organized by the Oncology Department in collaboration with the Vietnam Breast Cancer Network, patients will feel the care, encouragement and companionship from medical staff, philanthropists, as well as from the community. That will add confidence and strength to help them stay steadfast during the treatment process."
