Mai Linh Bridge is located on National Highway 6, considered the main route connecting Hanoi with the Northwestern provinces. Recently, this main traffic intersection has often experienced prolonged traffic jams, especially after storm No. 3 made landfall.
Mai Linh Bridge (Ha Dong) is nearly 20km from the center of Hanoi. After storm No. 3 made landfall causing heavy rain, many key roads connecting suburban districts such as Quoc Oai, Chuong My, My Duc were flooded, vehicles poured onto National Highway 6 to enter and exit the center of Hanoi, causing traffic congestion from early morning until late afternoon.
Mai Linh Bridge is located on National Highway 6, considered the main route connecting Hanoi with the Northwestern provinces. Before Thang Long Avenue was built, this was almost the only route connecting Hanoi with provinces such as Hoa Binh , Son La... In recent years, traffic volume has increased rapidly, people's travel needs are high, while the bridge is quite narrow.
Mai Linh Bridge was constructed in 1985, completed and put into use in 1986. Previously, this bridge was managed by the Ministry of Transport , until 2008 it was handed over to the Hanoi Department of Transport. The bridge is now seriously degraded, unable to meet the needs and urban development.
Mr. Trinh Van Thang (My Duc, Hanoi) is a small truck driver, he goes back and forth through Mai Linh bridge intersection twice a day, said: "In the morning, I leave home around 6am, when I get to Mai Linh bridge intersection it is around 7am. Before, there were times when there were traffic jams but it only took about 15 to 20 minutes to get through. Now, there are days when it takes an hour to get through."
In recent days, many vehicles traveling in the directions of Hoa Binh, My Duc, and Chuong My have had to choose this route to travel because other routes have sections that are flooded and impassable. (Image of the 5-way intersection at the beginning of Mai Linh bridge in Yen Nghia and Dong Mai wards, Ha Dong district, on the morning of September 16).
Although the functional forces such as traffic police and local police were mobilized to ensure safety and prevent traffic jams, they could only partially resolve the problem due to the large volume of vehicles. The scene of jostling and refusing to line up to follow the instructions of the functional forces caused traffic chaos.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lanh (Yen Nghia, Ha Dong) said: "I have been selling vegetables at the market right at the beginning of Mai Linh bridge for decades. Every year the traffic situation here is different. Recently, local traffic jams often occur, especially when there are no police forces. To limit traffic jams, many signs prohibit and direct vehicles to move by the hour, but they are ineffective. Every early morning and late afternoon there is always serious traffic jams."
Many trucks traveling from Ha Dong to the suburbs had to line up in long lines on Yen Nghia dike to wait their turn. On the morning of September 16, drivers had to wait in line for an hour to get through this intersection.
"There was a day when I had to queue from Lan Chi supermarket in Chuc Son town, "crawl" for a long time to reach Mai Linh bridge. After crossing the bridge, I had to crawl again until I was near Yen Nghia bus station before I could escape. All the roads were crowded, no matter where I went, there was traffic jam", Mr. Tam - a technology driver complained.
In the days after storm No. 3 landed, this route often saw traffic queues stretching 1km from Chuc Son town in Chuong My district. In the opposite direction, vehicles had to queue from the Yen Nghia bus station (Ha Dong).
