Press secretary of the Election Campaign Committee for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ms. Alexandra Suvorova, announced on December 30 that she had collected 500,000 signatures across Russia supporting Mr. Putin's independent candidacy in the presidential election in March 2024.

“Today, the Central Election Commission counted the first signatures collected from Moscow and brought them to the central headquarters; from January 5, other regions will start sending signatures,” Ms. Suvorova said.

According to the committee representative, the agency's lawyers will begin checking all necessary documents.

Previously, Secretary of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation (SIK), Ms. Natalya Budarina, said that SIK had registered a list of 346 people authorized by President Putin to help him campaign for the upcoming presidential election.

As of December 23, 29 people have applied to run for president of Russia. The deadline for candidates from political parties to submit their candidacy is January 1, 2024.

Candidates representing political parties are selected by secret ballot at the congresses of these parties.

On December 8, speaking at the Gold Star award ceremony at the Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow, Mr. Putin declared: “I will run for President of the Russian Federation,” while admitting that he had thought long and hard about his upcoming presidential term, adding that “there is no other way” but that path.

President Putin's current term ends on May 7, 2024. Russia's next presidential election is scheduled for March 17.
