The fighting situation in the border area between Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia provinces is becoming tense as Ukrainian sources admit that many counterattacks have failed, while the Russian army continues to maintain its momentum of advancing westward. This is one of the important areas where both sides are trying to gain control of strategic logistics routes. According to Ukrainian media, the Russian Armed Forces have made steady progress in recent days, especially in the Pokrovskoe - Huliaipole direction, which is considered Ukraine's "second defense belt" in the south. Russian units have advanced close to the villages of Novoivanivka, Olhivske, Vyshneve and Ternove, significantly expanding the area of control.
Ukrainian monitoring sources confirm that north of Olhivske, Russian troops have closed an area of about 6.6 km², creating a local encirclement, forcing Ukrainian defense forces to retreat to reserve positions. Fierce fighting is still ongoing in the Poltavka area and on the road towards Uspenovka. Some Ukrainian military experts admit that the recent counterattacks have not achieved the desired results due to a lack of artillery reserves and logistical overload. Meanwhile, the Russian side has increased artillery fire, reconnaissance UAVs and engineering units to expand the attack corridor. In addition, Russian sources said that the “Eastern” combat groups of the Russian Armed Forces are “performing successive successes” in the Uspenovsko-Pavlovsk region. Several important Ukrainian strongholds on the southern flank of Novoivanivka have been captured, bringing Russia closer to the strategic route leading to Novogrigorovka.
According to the Russian update, the road to Novogrigorovka, considered the only logistical route supplying Ukraine’s frontline in this area, is now under fire control. Losing this route will seriously hinder Kiev’s supply and troop movements. From the north, the Russians were believed to be attacking Novogrigorovka from the Skotovataya Gully area, while from the east, they deployed pressing forces from Novoivanivka, forming a pincer movement that gradually tightened the siege around the town. Ukrainian reconnaissance teams say Russia is using “nibbling” tactics – advancing slowly, holding steady, but constantly applying pressure with artillery fire and suicide drones. Every day, Ukraine’s frontline positions are subjected to dozens of artillery shellings, limiting their ability to counterattack. Russian military sources confirmed that all Ukrainian counterattack attempts to retake Novoivanivka and Uspenovka were repelled, causing heavy losses to the enemy. However, information about the damage cannot be independently verified, and Kiev has not yet given an official response.
Observers say the Dnepropetrovsk-Zaporizhia front is becoming a key area in Russia’s efforts to expand the buffer zone around the Donetsk-Tokmak corridor. Control of the heights and logistics routes here could allow Russia to put direct pressure on the industrial heartland of Dnipro. On the Ukrainian side, the country’s General Staff said it was reinforcing its defensive positions and redeploying some units from the Orikhiv direction to stabilize the situation. Although it did not confirm the loss of land, Kiev acknowledged that the situation in some areas was “complicated and tense”, requiring “more flexible tactical measures”.
Fierce fighting continues around Novogrigorovka and Poltavka. Russia claims it is “advancing steadily”, while Ukrainian media also asserts it “will not lose the initiative”. The confrontation in Dnepropetrovsk is therefore predicted to be one of the fiercest battles in southern Ukraine this autumn.
