France calls for end to arms exports to Gaza and Lebanon

He sees this as the only way to end the two conflicts between Israel and Hamas and Hezbollah.

The conflict has escalated in recent weeks, with Israel attacking southern Lebanon, southern Beirut suburbs, and the Bekaa Valley, killing several top Hezbollah leaders and sending troops into areas of southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has responded with rockets fired deep into Israeli territory.

"We have reaffirmed the need for a ceasefire, which is necessary both in Gaza and Lebanon," Mr. Macron stressed. "This is urgent to protect hostages and innocent civilians, and to avoid the risk of conflict spreading throughout the region."

Mr. Macron said that stopping arms exports is the only way to end this situation.

Last week, Macron also called for a halt to arms supplies in the Gaza conflict as part of efforts to find a political solution, something Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said would only help Iran and its allies.

France is not a major arms supplier to Israel, with the value of military equipment exported last year being around 30 million euros, according to the French Defense Ministry 's annual report on arms exports.
