Reuters on March 30 quoted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledging to increase pressure on Hamas forces, while continuing negotiations on the release of hostages and efforts to implement US President Donald Trump's "voluntary migration" plan in the Gaza Strip.

Mr Netanyahu said the Israeli cabinet agreed to increase pressure on Hamas, which had agreed to a ceasefire proposal from mediators Egypt and Qatar.

The leader denied that Israel was not negotiating, saying "we are doing it under fire, and therefore it is also effective".

Hamas said on March 29 it had agreed to a proposal from Egypt and Qatar. Security sources said the proposal included the release of five Israeli hostages a week, but ruled out the possibility of laying down arms at Israel's request.

Meanwhile, health officials in Gaza said on March 30 that Israeli airstrikes continued, killing at least 20 people, including several children. Nine people were killed in a tent in the southern city of Khan Younis.

Since Israel resumed its offensive in Gaza on March 18, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed and tens of thousands have been forced to flee northern areas where they returned after a ceasefire in January.

Mr Netanyahu demanded that Hamas lay down its weapons and commit to allowing its leaders to leave Gaza. He did not give details on how long Israeli troops would remain in the enclave, but reiterated that Hamas ' military capabilities and rule in Gaza must be eliminated.

"We will ensure the common security in the Gaza Strip and allow the implementation of Mr. Trump's plan, the voluntary migration plan. It is a plan, we are not hiding it, we are ready to discuss it at any time," he said.

Mr Trump initially proposed relocating all 2.3 million Gazans to countries including Egypt and Jordan, and developing the strip into a US-owned resort. However, no country has agreed to take in Gazans. Israel has since said any Palestinian departure would be voluntary.
