Upon its release, "Cong Tu Bac Lieu " - starring Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc and Meritorious Artist Huu Chau - topped the box office charts. However, the film has yet to make a big splash despite its famous cast and massive promotional campaign.

Last week, cinemas witnessed fierce competition between two Vietnamese movies. The Prince of Bac Lieu appeared, overthrowing the top position of Lynx: Possessed on the Box Office Vietnam chart (independent box office monitoring unit).

However, the film's revenue has not exploded despite the presence of a famous cast and intriguing content. Despite a rather massive promotional strategy, the crew has not been able to help the work attract audiences.

The Prince of Bac Lieu not yet feverish

The Prince of Bac Lieu is one of the outstanding Vietnamese films released at the end of the year, expected to achieve high revenue thanks to the gathering of famous actors such as Song Luan, Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc, Kaity Nguyen, Doan Thien An - Miss Grand Vietnam 2022...

Over the three-day weekend, the film earned over 16 billion VND with 188,292 tickets sold out of 8,306, bringing the total opening revenue to over 17 billion VND. This figure is not impressive for a Vietnamese film with a strong investment and a famous cast.

Not to mention, many Vietnamese movies released before had explosive revenue like Bran (48 billion), Ma da (40 billion), Lynx: Possessed (over 41 billion), The bride of a wealthy family (34 billion)…

The film's content more or less creates curiosity when telling about the son of Bac Lieu - real name Tran Trinh Huy (1900-1974), known as "the world's number one playboy".

The character is famous for his rich, dissolute life and interesting anecdotes, making him a special cultural symbol of the Southwest region.

Unfortunately, most of the audience did not appreciate the work. Despite the beautiful visuals, the script was still safe with many details mainly inserted to make people laugh. The dramatic element mainly relied on the relationship between the main characters' father and son, creating a familiar and old feeling.

The actors' performances were also controversial. Song Luan tried his best but was still not too impressive with the male lead role. The veteran actors such as Meritorious Artist Thanh Loc, Meritorious Artist Huu Chau, Thanh Thuy played their roles well while the younger generation Kaity Nguyen, Doan Thien An, Cong Duong... are dim.

Coming in second place on the overall rankings is Moana 2 Journey. The animated project from Disney proved its appeal when it earned more than 8 billion VND on the weekend. At one point, the work even surpassed Vietnamese films to top the daily box office rankings. Box Office Vietnam .

This is the sequel to the blockbuster that rocked the box office when it was released in 2016. Like the first part, the work is highly appreciated for its visuals and plot, giving viewers an interesting and meaningful adventure.

In the international market, Moana 2 Journey also had an impressive debut, raking in more than 221 million USD in just the first five days. Currently, the film's total revenue is more than 440 million USD, ranking fourth in the list of the most popular animated films this year, and is still stirring up the box office with positive feedback from the audience.

Moana 2's journey is causing a global fever.

Gloomy cinema

The appearance of The Prince of Bac Lieu and Moana 2 Journey push Lynx: Possessed down to third place in the rankings Box Office Vietnam .

The film only earned over 5 billion VND at the weekend, down about 56% compared to last week (11.3 billion VND), total revenue at 79 billion VND. At this rate, the film will hardly reach the 100 billion VND milestone, most likely stopping at 85-90 billion VND.

The remaining two positions in the top 5 belong to comedies. Laughter across borders (952 million VND) and horror movies Ghost Festival (881 million VND). However, both films had unimpressive revenue, showing that the audience's attention was focused on the top 3.

Previous notable films such as Wicked, Zombieland, Schoolmates in Love, Gladiator 2… were all knocked out of the top 5 with low revenue (under 1 billion VND).

Meanwhile, cartoons The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim had a poor opening at Vietnamese theaters with a revenue of just over 367 million VND.

This is the first anime project based on JRR Tolkien's classic work. The work also serves as a prequel to the film trilogy. Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) directed by Peter Jackson, with many content connecting and expanding the world of Middle-earth.

The film scores points with beautiful visuals but the story is superficial and lacks appeal. The promotional strategy is also not good, making the film fail to arouse curiosity among Vietnamese audiences.

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of the Rohirrim animated film is not a hit.

Cinemas are likely to fall into a prolonged slump in the near future as there are not many outstanding projects being released. This week there are only superhero blockbusters. Kraven the Hunter Sony's project has not been well promoted so it is likely that it will not launch with much fanfare.

The remaining movies are as follows: Perfect Family, Ghost in the Shell, Chains: Soul Binding … all lack the outstanding elements to attract audiences.

Therefore, it will be at least two weeks before the Vietnamese movie is released. Sister-in-law (with Viet Huong, Hong Dao) and bomb panels Mufasa: The Lion King It was only after its release that the box office really became lively again.
