Cottage cheese also sets itself apart with its impressive nutritional profile and health benefits.
Rich in protein
Cottage cheese is a great source of protein. A half-cup serving contains 11 grams of protein, which is about a quarter of the recommended daily intake for a 150-pound adult with minimal physical activity.
This is significantly higher than the amount of protein found in a typical serving of other cheeses like provolone, cheddar, and mozzarella.
"Half a cup of cottage cheese contains the same amount of protein as two eggs, making it a protein-rich option that will keep you full for a long time after your meal," Brittany Brown, a nutritionist and founder of Feeding Babies Nourishing Souls in Nova Scotia, Canada, tells Health magazine.
Contains many probiotics
Many cheeses contain probiotics, which are live microorganisms that can support gut health.
But fermented cottage cheeses—labeled "live and active cultures"—often contain higher levels of beneficial bacteria, which can survive pasteurization, nutritionist Maura Fowler told Health magazine.
Low in calories, sodium and fat
Cottage cheese is a heart-healthy choice. A serving of low-fat cottage cheese contains only 82 calories, less than other popular cheeses such as cheddar and mozzarella.
“Fresh cheese is packed with nutrients and low in calories,” says nutritionist Kaitlin Hippley.
While regular cottage cheese isn't necessarily lower in fat and sodium than many other cheeses, it is one of the few lower-sodium and lower-fat cheeses widely available.
“There are some regular cheeses that are made in a lower-fat style, but it’s much easier to find cottage cheese made from skim milk, which has almost 90% less fat depending on the cheese you’re comparing,” says Fowler.
Rich in vitamins and minerals
Cottage cheese is a rich source of several important nutrients. A half-cup serving of low-fat cottage cheese contains:
Phosphorus: 148mg
Vitamin B12: 0.42mcg
Selenium: 14.6mcg
Calcium: 103mg
Riboflavin: 0.23 mg
Fresh cheese can be enjoyed with fruit or with eggs or grilled dishes; Served with toast; Incorporated into dips, homemade sauces and dressings
Fresh cheese is rich in vitamins and minerals, protein and probiotics, making it a healthy choice.
