Russian official in Kherson says Ukraine attempted assassination

The Russian-appointed acting governor of Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, accused the Ukrainian army of firing guided artillery shells at him but failed.

"On June 9, Kiev tried to track me down, firing more than 10 M982 Excalibur long-range guided artillery shells at the locations where I was believed to be in Kherson province," Saldo wrote on Telegram on June 16.

The Russian-appointed leader of Kherson alleged that the attack was carried out on the direct orders of the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry Kirill Budanov and on the instructions of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Mr Saldo added that the attacks on him injured several Kherson civilians and destroyed shelters for people in the port of Zhelezny and Arabatskaya Strelka.

Ukraine has not yet responded to the information.

In August 2022, Vitaly Gura, a Russian-appointed official in the Kherson region’s Kakhovka city, was assassinated. In June 2022, Yevgeny Sobolev, head of the Kherson region’s prison service, was injured when a homemade bomb exploded near his car.

Russia annexed the four regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in October 2022, although it has not yet fully controlled any of them. The Russian Election Commission announced on June 15 that it will hold elections for the leaders of these four regions in September. Ukraine and many Western countries criticized and affirmed that they do not recognize Russia's annexation.
