Pay attention to handling "black spots" at Km 115+800, National Highway 4D

National Highway 4D is the main route connecting Lao Cai city (old) to Sa Pa National Tourist Area. This is a difficult route, with many steep passes and high traffic volume, so there is always a risk of traffic accidents. In particular, Km 115+800 is considered a "black spot" where accidents often occur due to the steep slope, sharp turns and dangerous deep abysses.

As a long-distance driver for Sao Viet bus company, who regularly takes passengers to Sa Pa National Tourist Area, Mr. Do Ngoc Son is quite familiar with difficult roads. However, every time he passes the steep curve at Km 115+800 (the gate of the old Trung Chai Commune People's Committee headquarters, now the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ta Phin Commune) on National Highway 4D, Mr. Son can breathe a sigh of relief.

Mr. Do Ngoc Son said: As a long-distance bus driver, often traveling on National Highway 4D, I find the curve at Km 115+800 quite dangerous, many cars have had accidents here, not only collisions but also sometimes losing control and crashing into the embankment. I hope the authorities will soon handle this so that the travel of people and tourists can be more convenient and safer.

Km 115+800, National Highway 4D has many sharp turns, steep slopes, heavy traffic volume, and potential risk of traffic accidents.

Not only drivers from other provinces, but also people in Lao Cai ward who often go to Sa Pa to work are not safe when passing this road because the road has a high slope, many consecutive hairpin bends, limited visibility, and a deep abyss below. On foggy days, the risk of traffic accidents is even greater.

Mr. Duong Anh Tuan, Lao Cai ward, said: I often go to Sa Pa to install doors, the section Km 115+800 is very dangerous, especially when there is fog or rain, the road is slippery. I hope that the departments and branches will soon handle this section of road to make it straighter for people to travel safely.

In fact, at the traffic black spot at Km 115+800 on National Highway 4D, many serious accidents have occurred. Most recently, at noon on September 11, 2025, a passenger bus with license plate 36H 100.XX carrying 36 passengers from Sa Pa National Tourist Area to Km 115+800 suddenly lost its brakes, hit the guardrail on the side of the road, and then crashed into the embankment right at the gate of Trung Chai Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities.

On September 11, a passenger bus crashed into the embankment in front of the school gate. Fortunately, there were no students at the time of the accident.

The collision caused severe damage to the front of the car, fortunately only a few passengers were injured.

Such accidents make teachers and more than 440 students of Trung Chai Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities extremely worried.

Teacher Vang Thi Hai Yen, Vice Principal of Trung Chai Primary School for Ethnic Minorities, said: My school gate is right next to National Highway 4D, so the risk of traffic safety is very high. Recently, a passenger bus crashed into the guardrail and then turned around and crashed into the school gate area. Fortunately, the accident happened at 10:55, 5 minutes before school closes. The school also hopes to have a plan to build a new, safer school.

Police force propagates and guides traffic safety skills for students of Trung Chai Primary Boarding School.

Faced with traffic safety issues at Km 115+800 on National Highway 4D, recently, the authorities have implemented many solutions to reduce the risk of accidents. The road has been widened; the guardrail system has been raised to 2 levels; the road surface has been marked with speed-reducing lines; and signs have been installed limiting the maximum speed to 30km/h. In addition, the Traffic Police force also regularly patrols and propagates to raise awareness among people traveling through this area.

Lieutenant Colonel Pham Luong Nhan, Deputy Head of the Traffic Police Department, Lao Cai Provincial Police, said: This is a point with a high risk of accidents due to inadequate traffic organization. The road has many curves, a steep slope, and is facing a deep abyss of about 100 meters. In the short term, we continue to coordinate with sectors and localities to put up warning signs and propaganda for drivers to use low gear and check their brakes carefully before going downhill. In the long term, we propose and recommend that relevant agencies and units study cutting curves, and plant trees, especially bamboo trees, on both sides of the road at dangerous points to minimize the consequences when an accident unfortunately occurs.

Solutions have been deployed, but to eliminate the traffic "black spot" at Km 115+800 on National Highway 4D, there needs to be synchronous and timely participation of all levels and functional sectors. First of all, every citizen when participating in traffic needs to raise awareness, responsibility, comply with speed and safety regulations to avoid unfortunate accidents.
