AI is being used in tournaments in Germany. |
German media reported that Bochum and several other clubs are considering using AI to assist in player recruitment, coach selection and sporting director recruitment.
After a disappointing season that saw them relegated to Bundesliga 2, Bochum are determined to overhaul their game. They see the integration of technology into football as a way to help the team rebuild in a more modern direction, instead of continuing to follow traditional methods that can easily lead to mistakes in assessment.
Bochum are in talks with an AI platform to use it to analyse player data – from physical attributes, form, development potential to tactical suitability – to make long-term predictions over 3-6 years. The maintenance fee is around 100,000 euros/year.

Bochum has undergone a comprehensive transformation thanks to technology. |
Going beyond player recruitment, AI is also expected to be used to support decisions on appointing coaches and technical directors, based on criteria such as strategic fit, management ability and tactical style.
Bochum's choice is surprising as the world's top football teams such as Liverpool, Manchester City, PSG or Bayern Munich mainly integrate AI into player index analysis, instead of applying it to decision-making in other aspects.
Bochum's leadership believes that AI data and algorithms can help reduce errors compared to traditional assessments, which are often emotional and influenced by personal relationships.
