Rapper Phap Kieu talks about HIEUTHUHAI, his controversial genderless style

Phap Kieu is a popular face after Rap Viet season 3. He is considered the pioneer LGBT rapper in Vietnamese music .

On June 18, Phap Kieu held a launch event for the song DOC - his first music product after nearly a year since the Rap Viet program. The song carries the message "fighting poison with poison", using one's own strength to face public opinion.

Sharing with the media, the rapper from Vinh Long said that the MV DOC is a combination of Korean music colors and Egyptian cultural inspiration. He wears heavy makeup in the style of a "Barbie doll", wears many unique costumes, wears a wig, and impresses with a genderless image.

"After Rap Viet, I have had many changes in my life and work. I hope to create a unique product that shows my uniqueness," said Phap Kieu.

In response to the opinion that if Phap Kieu continues to have a genderless image, the way he dresses as a "girl" in future music products could bore the audience, he replied: "In today's era, everyone is open about genderless issues. If I go in a safe direction, I will not be able to fully develop myself.

My next songs will be of various genres. My image will depend on that music genre. I am not perfect yet, I need to learn a lot. However, I am still a person who lives true to myself. I am a Westerner who "says what I mean", and I will moderate the bad things."

Phap Kieu admitted that before joining Rap Viet , he was very "rebellious" and made mistakes. After that, he changed his personality, calmed down, focused on making music, and seriously pursued art.

Regarding the story of Phap Kieu being a "hardcore fan" of HIEUTHUHAI, having filmed many videos calling his senior "husband", the rapper born in 2001 said: "When I was still a TikToker, I was a fan of Hieu, and was inspired by him a lot. At that time, I was young so I liked to tease him on social networks.

Now that I'm more mature, we're like normal friends and colleagues. In the future, if there's a chance, maybe I'll invite HIEUTHUHAI to join a music product together."

Attending the introduction of Phap Kieu's new song, rapper BigDaddy expressed his pride in his student's progress after Rap Viet . He said he felt like he was attending a "parent-teacher meeting for his child".

"Today I feel like I'm going to a parent-teacher meeting for my child. I've been with Phap Kieu for a year. At first, she was still shy and awkward when interacting with rappers. But now I feel proud because Kieu's journey has taken off so quickly. Of course, there will be ups and downs in the future, but I wish Kieu to always be steadfast on the path she has chosen," BigDaddy shared.

Phap Kieu's real name is Nguyen Thien Phap, born in 2001, from Vinh Long. He used to be a famous TikToker with a Western accent, making humorous videos revolving around stories of the LGBT community.

Over the past year, Phap Kieu has attracted attention as the first LGBT rapper in the Vietnamese music industry. At Rap Viet 2023, he was loved for his quick-witted personality and many exchanges with MC Tran Thanh.
