Schmeichel exposes transfer chaos at Man United

Peter Schmeichel - a former icon in the Old Trafford goal - has openly criticized Manchester United's "confusing and contradictory" transfer policy.

Schmeichel is confused by Manchester United's transfer policy.

“You only have to look at what Hojlund is doing at Napoli,” Schmeichel told the BBC Sacked in the Morning podcast. “He scores goals when he’s well served, playing with Kevin De Bruyne and McTominay. I’ve been saying for two and a half years that Hojlund could score 25 goals a season for Man United if they get him right.”

But instead of being patient, Man United let Hojlund go simply because of his scoring form last season, then bought Benjamin Sesko for £74 million from RB Leipzig - a deal that Schmeichel called "bizarre to the point of incomprehension".

“You spend over £70m on a new striker, and you still don’t have a proper holding midfielder, and you don’t have a goalkeeper,” said the Dane. “Why buy someone you don’t need? Maybe because the new director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, who came from Leipzig, wants to make his mark.”

According to Schmeichel, it was the fact that too many “powerful people” such as Amorim, Vivell, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox were involved in the transfer business that made the club lose direction. “Everyone had their own point of view, their own ego, and as a result the team no longer had an identity,” he added.

Ironically, two names that Man United abandoned are now shining brightly at Napoli. Hojlund, only 22, has scored 4 goals in 6 games in all competitions, while Scott McTominay - who was considered "redundant" at Old Trafford - became a Scudetto hero last season with 13 goals, 6 assists and the Serie A Player of the Year award.

“McTominay is the archetypal Man United player – hard-working, loyal, uncomplaining. But because he can play in so many positions, managers never build teams around him,” Schmeichel said. “He is a victim of an era where people prefer players who are ‘pretty’ rather than effective.”

Now, with Hojlund and McTominay both shining under Antonio Conte, Napoli are top of Serie A, while Manchester United are still struggling in the Premier League table - a paradox that has led Schmeichel himself to bitterly admit: "I don't understand why two players like that are no longer at Old Trafford. Maybe Man United are forgetting who they used to be."
