Sharing on October 15, Gattuso said: "If I can't take the team to the World Cup, I will leave this country. I already live quite far away, but if the situation gets worse, I will go even further."

Gattuso's statement immediately attracted the attention of Italian and international media. This move also proves that the Italian team is eager to return to the biggest tournament on the planet after two consecutive absences.

Italy is currently in second place in Group I of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and has secured at least a play-off spot thanks to a 3-0 win over Israel on October 15. But for the "Azzurri" to compete directly for a ticket to the finals is still a difficult task, because Norway is leading the group with a superior goal difference.

Gattuso was recently appointed as Italy's head coach to replace Luciano Spalletti in June, with the task of helping the national team qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Gattuso was a key part of the 2006 World Cup winning squad and won 73 caps for Italy. He was also part of the squad that won the 2000 European Under-21 Championship.

Gattuso has coached AC Milan, Napoli, Marseille and most recently Hajduk Split. At Napoli, he helped the team win the Coppa Italia 2019/20. During his playing career, Gattuso was known for his fiery playing style and was not afraid of confrontation.
